  • 10-year term for arson, meth

    A Mt. Olive man who was arrested on aggravated arson and methamphetamine charges a little more than a year ago has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

  • National Week of Prayer is this week

    The National Week of Prayer is being observed in Vandalia throughout this week, starting with a community prayer on Sunday night and ending with the National Day of Prayer breakfast this Thursday.

    The schedule for the week is as follows:

    • Sunday – Community prayer at First Church of God on Thrill Hill Road, 6 p.m.

    • Monday – Prayer at Vandalia Chamber of Commerce, 7:45-8 a.m., with the Rev. John Glennon of Parkview Free Methodist Church the facilitator.

  • Former VCHS teacher, coach, administrator dies

    Former Vandalia Community High School teacher, coach and administrator Vito “Vic” Provinzano died on Thurday, April 23, at his home in Mattoon.
    Services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mattoon. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Mattoon. Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham was in charge of arragements; online condolences may be expressed at www.hallfuneralchapel.com.
    Mr. Provinzano survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lucille; and three daughters.

    Pageant call-in day is Saturday

    This Saturday is call-in day for contestants for this year's Little Miss and Junior Fayette County pageants.
    Parents of contestants for the Little Miss pageant (ages 5-7) may begin calling at 9 a.m., and contestants for the Junior Miss pageant (entering grades 6-8) may begin calling at 10 a.m. The number to call is 427-3762.
    The first 20 callers in each division will be accepted for the pageants.
    Contestants for this year's Miss Fayette County Fair may enter through June 9.

  • Klitzing receives gifts from the Cardinals

    Shirley Klitzing is known for being a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan all of her life –    “Since I was 8 years old and Enos Slaughter hit a home run and they (Cardinals) won the World Series.
    “I think it was 1946,” she said.

  • Food Bank Visits St. Elmo

    Pinnacle Foods in St. Elmo again hosted a visit by the Central Illinois Food Bank, and again was among the businesses donating food for the distribution.

    In the first photo, Cameron Kirby doles out some onions, and in the second photo, Karlee Kruenegel hands out baked goods such as bread, cookies and cakes. The mobile food pantry was made possible through donations from the Fayette County Farm Bureau, First United Methodist Church of St. Elmo, St. Elmo Lions Club and Vandalia Lions Club, as well as Pinnacle Foods.

  • Officer retires; city to fill spot

    The Vandalia City Council on Monday approved the retirement of a long-time police officer, then took the first step in hiring his replacement.
