  • Shimkus again solicits 'Valentines for Heroes'

    Congressman John Shimkus (R-Illinois, 15th District) is again asking constituents to participate in his “Valentines for Heroes” program.
    The congressman’s district offices will collect valentines for distribution throughout the region to veterans and those currently serving in the military.
    “Thousands of valentines have come into my offices every year since we began Valentines for Heroes,” Shimkus said.
    “Constituents have been overwhelmingly generous and supportive of our military men and women, past and present.

  • Seeking a city administrator

    The city of Vandalia has begun its search for a city administrator, and three individuals have already expressed an interest in the job.
    Mayor Rick Gottman announced at Monday’s city council meeting that the job has been posted statewide through the Illinois Municipal League, Illinois Department of Councils and the Illinois City and County Managers.
    Gottman said that he had begun posting the job more than two weeks ago, and that he has already received three resumés. The city will receive resumés through March 28, he said.

    The Vandalia Board of Education approved on Tuesday a plan to move most students from Jefferson Primary School to two other buildings in the district.

    Miss Fayette County Fair Queen Sierah Ruffner will compete, along with 73 other contestants from throughout the state, at the 56th annual Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant during the IAAF Convention this Thursday through Sunday at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield.

  • FCHD will offer career sessions for local youths

    The Fayette County Health Department has partnered with SCI-AHEC to provide Fayette County students in grades 6-12 with the opportunity to learn about different careers from professionals in the community.
    Four sessions are scheduled, and students who attend all four sessions will have their names entered into a drawing. All sessions will be held at the Fayette County Health Department, 419 E. Edwards St., Vandalia.
    Each session runs from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and there is no charge for students to attend.

  • Girl Scout cookie sales now underway

    Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois kicked off the cookie program Jan. 9 with Cookie Rallies throughout the council.
