  • County Board chairman resigns

    Saying that he could continue to serve on the county board after being cleared in an investigation initiated by two County officers, board Chairman Steve Knebel said on Tuesday that he has chosen not to do so.

    Knebel resigned at the end of Tuesday's board meeting, explaining that the investigation was initiated after he made a suggestion on filling a vacancy in the county clerk's office.

  • Vandalia City Hall closed for funeral Wednesday morning

    Vandalia City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, from 9:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M., for the funeral of former employee Dolores Thoman.
    Dolores worked for the City of Vandalia for 28 years, from May 1981 to December 2009.

    • Junior Miss Fayette County and Mr. Fayette County pageants, 6:30 p.m., Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for ages 6-11, with ages 5 and under admitted free.

    • Dog show, 2 p.m.
    • Truck and tractor pulls, 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6-11, with ages 5 and under admitted free.
    THURSDAY
    • 4-H general project judging, 9 a.m., with awards presentation at 6 p.m.

  • Lincoln Festival is this weekend

    A two-day event that presents the history of this community and nation in entertaining fashion returns for a second encore this weekend.
    The Lincoln Heritage Festival, held in Vandalia parks along Fillmore Street, begins mid-morning on Saturday and continues through mid-afternoon on Sunday.
    The festival opens to the public at 10 a.m., when Civil War camps open in Sonnemann Park and the Sons of the American Revolution present a program on the history of the U.S. flag.

  • City workers to replace line, save big money

    The decision of two department heads to take on a major project could save the city of Vandalia up to $50,000.
    Public Works Director Marlin Filer and Water Plant Superintendent Marty Huskey have jointly agreed to replace the line delivering water from Vandalia Lake to the city’s water treatment plant.
    The city learned of a major leak several weeks ago and recently determined, Huskey said, that Kaskaskia River flooding had eroded a west river bank and also broke the lake supply line north of the water plant.

  • Coroner investigating apparent suicide

    Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen is continuing to investigate an apparent suicide early Monday morning.
    Bowen said that at 11:49 p.m. on Sunday, authorities received a report of an individual with a firearm threatening to harm himself at the Carlyle Lake Patoka access area.
    Fayette County sheriff’s deputies and the Illinois State Police responded to the call and located that individual’s vehicle.
    Asked multiple times to exit his vehicle, Bowen said, the individual did not respond. Officers at the scene then heard a single gunshot.
