  • No city tax hike

    Given two options for a new tax levy, the Vandalia City Council on Monday went with a third, one coming from aldermen.
    The council was asked to OK a levy with an increase of 6.87 percent or one with a considerably larger increase, 18.26 percent. In the end, they voted for a levy with no increase.
    As is custom, Dale Timmermann presented information on the city’s new levy during a public hearing prior to Monday’s city council meeting.

    Marlys Hayner was there at the beginning and she was there at the end. For the duration of that 35-year period, Hayner helped to coordinate the program that has provided Christmas baskets for needy families in Fayette County.

  • City works up TIF guidelines

    With some aldermen having expressed in recent years a need for better guidelines for the distribution of Vandalia’s Tax Increment Financing funds, the mayor and city council gathered specifically for that purpose.
    During a 90-minute work session on Monday, a set of guidelines was put together with input from Mayor Rick Gottman and city aldermen.
    In preparation of that meeting, City Administrator LaTisha Paslay received copies of TIF guidelines from Granite City and McLeansboro.
