    The reigning Miss Fayette County was chosen as a finalist in the four-day Miss Illinois County Fair Pageant.
    Brandy Protz was picked as one of 15 finalists from the field of 72 contestants in the pageant during the finals on Sunday evening.

  • Stout starts getting busy

    Vandalia’s new director of economic development and tourism told the city council on Monday some things he will be doing as he gets acclimated to the position.
    Brian Stout told aldermen that one of his first projects will be meeting with local business people, “trying to put together some strategic plan and kind of seeing where they’re at.”

  • Golden Circle Menus

    Golden Circle Nutrition Program, located at 616 W. Jackson St. in Vandalia, provides meals in a comfortable setting to people 60 years and older and their spouses. There are no income guidelines or any type of restrictions besides the age limit. Meals are prepared by Deb’s Catering of Altamont and delivered fresh daily. The suggested donation is $3 for meals.

  • FNB alerts customers of skimming

    Customers of The First National Bank in Vandalia and other area banks recently fell victim to a scam involving card skimmers.
    Over the weekend, unauthorized charges in the Houston, Texas, area began showing up on the debit cards of more than 60 FNB customers and about a dozen non-customers.
    Bank personnel have determined that a card skimmer was inserted at ATMs at FNB’s Eighth Street branch in Vandalia, as well as two other non-FNB ATMs.

  • State police planning ACE patrols in February

    Illinois State Police District 12 Commander Capt. Cory Ristvedt announced on Tuesday that the ISP will conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement patrols in Effingham and Fayette counties during
    February.
    The ACE patrols allow the ISP to focus on preventing, detecting and taking enforcement action in response to violations associated with impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs.
    The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois.

  • State police release 2016 figures

    Illinois State Police District 12 Commander Capt. Cory Ristvedt recently announced activity and enforcement figures for 2016.
    Troopers in District 12, which includes Clark, Clay, Crawford, Cumberland,
    Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Lawrence, Marion and Richland counties answered 2,748 calls for service and initiated 21,905 incidents in the field during the year.
