  • Weekend death considered 'suspcious'

    The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is currently considering the death of a rural Brownstown man suspicious in nature.
    Coroner Bruce Bowen said on Tuesday morning that he is still waiting on lab results to determine the cause of death of James R. “Jim” Skinner.
    Skinner was found dead in his home in rural Brownstown on Sunday. He was pronounced dead by Bowen at 5:24 p.m. on Sunday.

    State Rep. John Cavaletto (R-Salem) announced on Monday that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming November 2018 election.

  • UPDATE: Rewards offered for vandalism information

    UPDATE: The Vandalia Police Department is providing a $1,500 for information leading to an arrest(s) and conviction(s), Fayette County Crime Watchers is offering a $750 reward, and Mayor Rick Gottman said that the city will match the Crime Watchers' $750 reward.
    Anyone with information about the vandalism can call Crime Watchers at 283-1986 or Vandalia Police at 283-0556.
     

  • St. Elmo Firefighters Participate in 9/11 Ceremony

    Members of the St. Elmo Fire Department again participated in the 9/11 Memorial Climb and Ceremony hosted by HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

    Members of the St. Elmo Fire Department who participated as the MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) honor guard were Chief Doug Engeljohn, Jim Giffin and Karen Wegscheid, and firefighter Josh Fulk who participated in the 110-Story Climb.

    Chris Smith feels he has accomplished a number of things in his first four years as Fayette County’s sheriff. Now, he’s ready to hold that post for another four years.

  • County OKs outside work on courthouse

    The Fayette County Board approved on Tuesday the low bid from a Vandalia contractor for exterior work on the county courthouse.
    The board accepted Lester Construction’s bid of $119,500, the lowest of two bids for the work, which will include guttering and window wells.
    Explaining the project, Chad Austin of the board’s building and grounds committee said that it’s “work that has got to be done before there’s more damage (to the exterior).”
