    Many remember the good old days, when you picked up a telephone receiver, a pleasant voice asked, Number, please. The helpful operator directed your call to the proper destination with without further ado.

    There were no electronic voices recordings with options and directions to press this number or that, no instructions to return to the main menu if none of the options were suitable, no If you want to speak to a representative (meaning a real, live person) or Sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialed.

  • County's E911 committee ready to get to work

    A committee looking into the possibility of bringing Enhanced 911 phone service to Fayette County residents is planning to step up their efforts this month.

    Fayette County Board Chairman Steve Knebel said after Tuesdays county board meeting that the countys E911 committee plans to meet in the near future with Mike Schabbing, the E911 coordinator in Jasper County.

  • Gottman delivers State of the City address

    Many Vandalia residents clamor for economic growth, and Mayor Rick Gottman said last week that figures support his claim that Vandalia is in trend of growth.

    A lot of communities are concerned about their growth, with whats going to happen, Gottman said during his State of the City address at last Wednesdays Vandalia Chamber of Commerce meeting.

    Our tax base keeps climbing, while others are starting to fall, he said.

  • New budget includes new pumps at Vandalia Lake

    The city of Vandalias budget for the coming fiscal year is pretty much like the current budget, as far as the total and some of the projects being funded.

    But it does include some new items, including monies for an important infrastructure project.

    The new budget has a bottom-line total of $13.4 million, which City Administrator Jimmy Morani said is unchanged from the current budget.

  • Dedication, ribbon-cutting held for KC Vandalia Campus

    "I am pleased to say that now, Vandalia is truly a college town."

    Speaking at the dedication of the new Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus last Friday, KC President Dr. James Underwood said that the new facility on West Fillmore Street became a reality only because so many people in the community worked toward that goal.

  • Soil and water conservation district, Extension learn that state funds being released

    Under the bright sunshine on a warm spring afternoon, Vandalia sixth-graders ventured out of the classroom to learn about Vandalia Lake, water quality, soils and other conservation issues. A week ago, the agency that organized Vandalia Lake Appreciation Day were thinking that Mondays event would be the last of its type.

    Brittany Brown and Adam Bowling were crowned queen and king at the Vandalia Community High School prom on Saturday evening.

  • Fire destroys empty house

    A fire early Saturday morning destroyed a vacant house.

    Vandalia firefighters were called out at about 2:30 a.m. for a house fire at the west end of Edwards Street.

  • Vandalia Cleanup Week is May 12-16

    The city of Vandalia's annual spring Cleanup Week is May 12-16.

    During that week, residents may get rid of larger unwanted items by setting them out with their trash on their regular trash pickup day.

    The following items WILL NOT be picked up:

    Paint in a wet stage.

    Car batteries.

    Brush and other landscape waste.

    Construction materials.

    Hazardous waste materials.

    Tires.
