  • McCarter will address chamber

    State Sen. Kyle McCarter will be the speaker at next Wednesday's meeting of the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce.

    The chamber meets at noon in the Lincoln Room at Ponderosa. A luncheon is followed by a business meeting and the program.

  • Evans takes oath of office in 102nd District

    With family, friends and supporters looking on, Paul J. Evans took the official oath of office last Friday, becoming the new State Representative for the 102nd District.

    With his right hand raised and left hand on the Holy Bible, Evans was sworn in by the Hon. Judge George C. Lackey from the Circuit Court of Marion County.

  • New teachers' contract approved

    One week after teachers in the Vandalia district approved a new one-year contract, the Vandalia Board of Education at a special meeting on Wednesday also OK’d the pact.

    Both sides agreed to a contract that gives teachers a 2 percent raise and offers more options for health insurance. Though no increase was granted in the benefits package to cover additional health insurance premiums, the district made available two higher-deductible plans that will lower teachers’ premium payments. The teachers previously had only two plans from which to choose.

  • Denny's Opens

    The new Denny's Restaurant opened in Vandalia last Sunday evening.

    Owner/manager Dave Behrends, shown above, said that the opening of the 24-hour restaurant went smoothly. The 3,500-square-foot restaurant seats 132 customers either in booths or at  the counter. It is located next to the Fast Stop Travel Center at the western I-70 interchange. Nationally, Denny's has more than 1,550 restaurants

  • Fire destroys Hagarstown area home

    A fire believed to be electrical in nature destroyed a home near Hagarstown early last Wednesday morning.
    Vandalia firefighters were called to the home of the Brad Wilkerson at midnight.
    Upon their arrival, firefighters found the home to be fully involved in flames.
    Fire officials said the fire appeared to have started in a laundry area and spread to a stairway.
    Fifteen Vandalia firefighters responded to the call. Firefighters from the Mulberry Grove and Keyesport fire protection districts provided mutual aid assistance.

  • Farmer injured in accident

    An Augsburg area farmer was injured in an accident on his farm last Thursday morning.
    According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Wayne Summann, along with some other individuals on his farm, driving a utility tractor to pull some posts.
    One of the other workers noticed after a while that Summan was no longer on the tractor and went to check.
    According to the sheriff's report, the worker found Summann in a ditch trapped under the rear of the tractor.
    Summann was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.
