    The year 2012 is not only the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting, but it also marks the year that Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) transitioned the annual Cookie Sale Program from a fall sale to a spring sale.
    The sale was a great success, and Sarah Milash of Shobonier was the Top Seller for the Fayette County area.

    The Benjamin Mills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted its Good Citizen Award Ceremony in Greenville on March 24.

  • Fund shortage delaying bridge replacement

    The Fayette County Board approved a preliminary engineering agreement last Thursday for a bridge on a county road northeast of Farina that has temporarily been closed to traffic.
    The agreement with Rhutasel and Associates of Centralia is for a bridge over Dismal Creek on County Highway 28 (Altamont Road).
    County Engineer Michael Maxey explained that the bridge was closed on March 14 due to a hole in the southbound lane of the bridge.

  • School district watching spending

    Three-quarters of the way through the fiscal year, administrators in the Vandalia Community School District are continuing to watch their expenses in the face of shrinking state revenues.
    In fact, district expenses through March this year are actually $1.2 million less than they were a year ago at this time.
    “With the price of nearly everything going up, that’s a significant accomplishment by our teachers and administrators,” said Superintendent Rich Well.

  • City OKs water pact for parks

    The Vandalia City Council approved a water services agreement with the Vandalia Park District that one alderman describes as a partnership to serve city residents.
    Through the agreement, the city will not charge the park district for water used to fill the pool at the beginning of the pool’s season. That amount is estimated at 193,000 gallons.
    For water used during the remainder of the swimming season, the park district will be billed at half the usual charge.

    Farelisse Lassor, of Vandalia, competed in the French Lick, Ind., Casino Pageant on March 31, winning the crown of Ultimate Grand Supreme Queen.

  • Helping Tornado Victims

    Siblings Marjorie Price, age 15, and Michael Price, age 17, recently decided that they would help out victims of the Harrisburg tornado.

    They began raising donations at Vandalia Community High School, then went around to local businesses. Last week, they sent off about $200 to help the victims. "Because the government wasn't helping," Michael said, "we knew that they would need all of the help they could get."
