  • Schools may lose out on state funds

    Though the Vandalia Board of Education dealt with a variety of issues at its monthly meeting Tuesday, an announcement by Superintendent Rich Well about the possibility of diminished state funding was cause for concern among board members and school officials.

    Well told the board that hes hearing from other superintendents and others in the states educational hierarchy that theres a distinct possibility that the state will not make the final two state aid payments of the fiscal year in June.

  • Council's discussions on river intake continue

    For the second time in two weeks, the Vandalia City Council voted on bringing a second engineering firm in to study the new Kaskaskia River water intake. And for the second time in two weeks, the proposal was rejected.

    But support for that proposal, suggested by Alderman Chad Feldpouch, is growing.

    Discussion on the river intake which has been inoperable for lengthy periods since its installation in 2004 was initiated on Monday night by Mayor Rick Gottman, who said he received some phone calls after the councils March 3 meeting.

  • St. Elmo fundraiser generates close to $15,000 for fight against pediatric cancer

    For several years, Bryan Jennings' friends in Northern Illinois had been coming to them for support of their St. Baldrick fundraisers.

    While Jennings was happy to support those events held in the northern part of the state to raise funds for the fight against pediatric cancer, he thought it was time to hold such an event in this area.

    Jennings gained the support of his fellow firefighters on the St. Elmo Fire Department, then he invited the 22 departments that are a part of MABAS 54 (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) to also get involved.

  • 427-3322 going out of service

    For Brownstown Area Residents – Beginning on April 1, the emergency number of 427-3322 will no longer be in service.

    Residents should dial 911 in emergency situations.

  • About 50 to shave heads at child's cancer benefit

    About 50 area people have agreed to have their heads shaved as part of an event being held Sunday to fight pedriatic cancer.

    The St. Elmo Fire Department is hosting the event for St. Baldricks Foundation, a volunteer organization that works globally to raise money for childhood cancer research.

    The event is co-sponsored by MABAS 54 (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System), which is made up of fire departments in this region of the state.

  • Eight arrested in parole sweep

    Five local people who are currently on parole were arrested late last week on new charges during a targeted sweep of parolees conducted by four local agencies.

    Also arrested during that sweep were three people who were with the parolees who were taken into custody.

    The Illinois Department of Corrections, Fayette County Sheriffs Office, Illinois State Police and Vandalia Police Department participated in the parole compliance check conducted on Thursday.

  • Where there's smoke...

    As complaints about violations of Illinois new law prohibiting smoking in and near public facilities increase, Fayette Countys states attorney is among the growing list of prosecutors in the state who are challenging the legality of that new law.

    Stephen Friedel said on Tuesday that he agrees that second-hand smoke is harmful and can be annoying.

    Second-hand smoke annoys some people more than others, and to the extent that the law seeks to protect those who cannot choose for themselves, namely children, I believe the law has a legitimate purpose, he said.

  • Another vote on E911 planned

    If the chairman of the Fayette County Board has his way, county residents will be voting on an Enhanced 911 referendum as early as this November.

    At the close of Tuesdays county board meeting, Chairman Steve Knebel updated board members and department heads on a study being done on bringing the emergency phone service.

  • Nursing classes under way at new KC Vandalia Campus

    The first Kaskaskia College Licensed Practical Nursing Program began classes at the new Vandalia Campus on Feb. 4 with 15 students in the newly equipped health care lab in the Simma-Kelly Education Building.

    The practical nursing program is a three-semester program leading to a certificate.

  • Farm demonstration date changed again

    NOTE: Date of demonstration has been changed to March 19!

    On March 19, area cattle producers have a unique opportunity to see one of the most efficiently-run beef cattle operations in southern Illinois and learn about the benefits of the Illinois Heifer Development Program (IHDP). An IHDP Pre-Breeding Processing Demonstration will be held at the Stan and Lisa Buzzard Farm, Beecher City, Illinois, on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
