  • Traffic tickets up significantly in 2007

    For the most part, the number of cases filed in Fayette County Circuit Court last year was pretty much like that of 2006. There was one significant exception, however.

    According to records in the office of Circuit Clerk Marsha Wodtka, 7,162 traffic tickets were filed in that office. Thats a whopping 45 percent above the 2006 total of 4,931.

  • Despite flooding, Vandalia levees holding up

    About six years after Fayette County experienced one of the wettest springs in history, farmers in low-lying areas are again seeing their planting work being delayed by considerable rainfall.

    Add to that the amount of water coming down the Kaskaskia River when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has opened the gates at Lake Shelbyville.

    But, thus far, the Vandalia Levee and Drainage Districts levee system has withstood the excessive amounts of water fairly well.

  • Rep. Stephens offering free light bulbs

    State Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Highland) is offering residents of the 102nd District free Compact Fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) as part of the electric rate relief bill approved by the General Assembly.

    Part of the deal we made with Ameren included the distribution of free light bulbs to our constituents, Rep. Stephens explained. Beginning on April 1, residents of my district can come by my office in Highland on weekdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to pick up their free light bulbs.

  • Ramsey Lions Club's Community Sale is April 5

    On April 5, the community of Ramsey is anticipating in another standing-room-only crowd for the 47th consecutive Ramsey Lions Club Community Sale.

    The multi-block auction provides an exciting atmosphere for thousands of sellers, bidders and treasure hunters in up to seven sale rings in Lions Park.

    Food and refreshment items are available in Lions Pavilion.Tickets are being sold for $500 in cash prizes.

    West Front Street is set aside for vendors who may set up after noon April 4, no need to call ahead. And the community is generally alive with yard and garage sales.

  • KC officials say new Vandalia Campus is exceeding their expectations

    As they traveled throughout the Kaskaskia College district to hear the comments and opinions of residents, the KC president and chairman of the board of trustees have basically heard only one concern.

    The only concern that we have heard so far is that we need more space, that people in the district want more course offerings which is good to hear, Jim Beasley said while attending a breakfast program at KCs Vandalia Campus on Wednesday morning.

  • Walgreens wants to build store at site of Jay's Restaurant

    A development group interested in bringing a pharmacy and retail chain store to the site of a longtime restaurant in Vandalia took a step toward that goal last week.

    Requests for a parking variance at the corner of Eighth and Gochenour streets was approved last Wednesday by the citys Zoning Board of Adjustments.

    Those requests were filed by Larry Mabry and Mike Wehrle, owners of the properties where Walgreens is working to construct a store.

  • IHPA, Main Street help downtown owners

    The Vandalia Main Street Program and a state architect are continuing their efforts to help owners of downtown buildings who are interested in improving the exteriors of their structures.

    Through its affiliation with Illinois Main Street, Vandalia Main Street brought Illinois Historic Preservation architect Anna Margaret Borntrager to town for a second time a couple of weeks ago.

  • Schools may lose out on state funds

    Though the Vandalia Board of Education dealt with a variety of issues at its monthly meeting Tuesday, an announcement by Superintendent Rich Well about the possibility of diminished state funding was cause for concern among board members and school officials.

    Well told the board that hes hearing from other superintendents and others in the states educational hierarchy that theres a distinct possibility that the state will not make the final two state aid payments of the fiscal year in June.

  • Council's discussions on river intake continue

    For the second time in two weeks, the Vandalia City Council voted on bringing a second engineering firm in to study the new Kaskaskia River water intake. And for the second time in two weeks, the proposal was rejected.

    But support for that proposal, suggested by Alderman Chad Feldpouch, is growing.

    Discussion on the river intake which has been inoperable for lengthy periods since its installation in 2004 was initiated on Monday night by Mayor Rick Gottman, who said he received some phone calls after the councils March 3 meeting.

  • St. Elmo fundraiser generates close to $15,000 for fight against pediatric cancer

    For several years, Bryan Jennings' friends in Northern Illinois had been coming to them for support of their St. Baldrick fundraisers.

    While Jennings was happy to support those events held in the northern part of the state to raise funds for the fight against pediatric cancer, he thought it was time to hold such an event in this area.

    Jennings gained the support of his fellow firefighters on the St. Elmo Fire Department, then he invited the 22 departments that are a part of MABAS 54 (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) to also get involved.
