  • Talk on county chairman hike leads to county administrator discussion

    In the five months that he has served as the chairman of the Fayette County Board, Steve Knebel learned why his predecessor recommended a pay hike for the seat as he left office.

    And as the board talked about such a pay raise last Thursday, the discussion on county operations went a little further.

    When Dean Black left the chairmans seat last November, he suggested raising the board leaders monthly salary from $200 to $500. He said such an increase is justified because of the number of meetings and trips required of the chairman as he represents the county.

  • School district still waiting on state funds

    Though the Vandalia School District wont know for another couple months if the state will short the school districts by withholding the final two state funding payments of the fiscal year, Vandalia Superintendent Rich Well isnt holding his breath.

    The general consensus among superintendents in the state is that the more we hear about the states budget deficit, the more likely it is that the states school districts wont receive the 23rd and 24th state aid payments, Well said after Tuesdays meeting of the Vandalia Board of Education.

  • Election board grants Friedel objection to remove Goggin from ballot

    A local electoral board ruled on Tuesday that an error on documents filed on behalf of a Greenville attorney who wishes to run for Fayette County state's attorney is grounds to keep him off of the ballot.

    But Republican Dan Goggin said he would likely appeal that decision in an attempt to square off against Democratic incumbent Stephen Friedel.

    In making its ruling, the electoral board also dismissed Goggin's motion seeking dismissal of an objection Friedel filed last Wednesday in which he asked to remove Goggin as a candidate.

  • Second chance will unveil new shelter and kennel this Saturday

    The organization of volunteer individuals who have worked since 2004 to rescue dogs and cats from abuse and neglect is inviting the public to view its new rescue shelter and boarding kennel this Saturday.

    Second Chance Animal Rescue will hold a grand opening at its new facility from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The rescue shelter and boarding kennel is located about 1 1/2 south of U.S. Route 40 at Bluff City.

  • Braxton Denton involved in politics, local causes

    Though young in years, Braxton Denton has proven himself in the past to be an asset to his family, his friends, his church, his community and, more recently, to his college and Phi Theta Kappa.

    Denton, who will turn 21 in October, is a very personable, courteous, friendly, young man who seems to never meet a stranger. He has the gift of making everyone he meets feel as though he or she is someone of importanceand that person is important to Braxton.

  • Objection to state's attorney candidate granted

    But Daniel Goggin said he will continue to fight for his right to run for state's attorney by filing an appeal.

    State's Attorney Stephen Friedel, a Democrat, filed an objection to Goggin's right to run in the general election, alleging that Goggin filed his nominating paperwork too late.

    After the electoral board ruled in Friedel's favor, Goggin said he will appeal the decision as allowed by law, taking the matter to the circuit court.

  • Honor Chorus concert is this Saturday

    The Vandalia Elementary School's Honor Chorus will present its spring performance at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday in the Vandalia Elementary School gym.

    The chorus will be singing songs from "High School Musical."

    The concert is free, but donations will be accepted in honor of Carol Osborne, the Honor Chorus founder. The proceeds will go to Fayette County Relay for Life, which will be held on Saturday, June 7, on the high school track.

  • Watson works to stabilize VCC operations for future

    State Senator Frank Watson (R-Greenville) says hes disappointed the Illinois Department of Corrections (DOC) is proceeding with its ill-conceived plan to close the farm operation at the Vandalia Correctional Center (VCC), but hes hopeful commitments to enhance the Beverage and Meat Processing plants stabilizes the facility for the future.

  • City restricts parking at senior center

    The Vandalia City Council discussed at length on Monday whether to impose parking restrictions for the Vandalia Senior Citizens Center.

    And while a couple of aldermen questioned whether to limit parking there, or even whether it is the citys place to do so, an ordinance amendment putting those controls on the books was approved unanimously.

  • Parking draws lengthy debate

    After lengthy debate during both a committee meeting and the regular council meeting on Monday night, the Vandalia City Council approved action related to parking in the 200 block of South Second Street.

    The council, acting upon complaints of the Redwood Inn owners, agreed to have parking space lines painted along the east side on the north end of that block, adjacent to the new vehicle display lot created by Arthur Young Inc.
