    VCHS to host speaker on online issues

    Brent Maguire from TechnoArmer Consulting will be at Vandalia Community High School on Monday, speaking to students about cyberbullying, online harassment, sexting, texting, posting photos and videos, social network safety, the permancy of all postings and how some posting can affect individuals' reputation, education and career.
    On Monday at 6 p.m., VCHS will host a parent night featuring Maguire. The public is invited to attend.

    Vandalia's volunteer firefighters were called to a fire in a garage at the home of Kirk Forbis, 1800 W. Main St., at about 4:15 p.m. last Thursday.

  • Cameras in the Courtroom

    While the Illinois Supreme Court has given its OK for cameras in Illinois courts, it’s not likely that you’ll see any cameras in Fayette County’s courtrooms in the near future.
    And even if you did, the coverage that you see in this county will be different than that in the state’s metropolitan areas.
    Judge Gene Schwarm, Fayette County’s resident circuit judge and chief judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit, points out that the Supreme Court’s decision allows circuits to apply for participation in what is essentially a test.

  • Pana man killed in wreck Sunday morning

    A Pana man was killed in a one-vehicle accident about three miles north of Ramsey late Sunday morning.
    According to the Illinois State Police, Avgary G. Kehias, 88, was northbound in a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck at about 11:13 a.m. when the vehicle left the road, struck a utility pole and rolled over.
    Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen said that Kehias was ejected from the vehicle upon impact. Bowen pronounced Kehias dead at Fayette County Hospital.

    ✔ The Fayette County Knights of Columbus will hold an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Mother of Dolors Parish Center, Seventh and St. Clair streets, Vandalia. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-11. Carry-outs are available.

    A project to improve downtown Vandalia’s appearance and infrastructure has generated an award for the engineering firm that designed it.

  • School board OKs new contracts for administrators

    In a meeting that lasted about 45 minutes, the Vandalia Board of Education on Tuesday approved multi-year contracts for most of its administrators and OK’d the purchase of a school bus.

  • Alderman gets free help with river intake

    As it has worked to get its financial house in order, the city of Vandalia has allowed one costly project to fall by the wayside for the time being.
    But one alderman doesn’t want that to continue.
    Terry Beesley told Mayor Rick Gottman and other city aldermen on Tuesday night that he had contacted a number of governmental agencies about providing some advice on the city’s raw water intake on the Kaskaskia River.
    Beesley said he finally found someone willing to listen to him, and to consider providing some assistance.
