  • Second Chance shows off its new rescue shelter & boarding kennel

    After rescuing three Dobermans from euthanasia, Lynn Brown wondered whether she could work with others to provide the same type of service in Fayette County. Four years later, Brown and other volunteers with Second Chance Animal Rescue are celebrating another achievement in doing just that.

    Second Chance, which was started by Brown in 2004, invited the public to view its new rescue shelter and boarding kennel on Saturday.

  • Elliott will leave council this summer

    Vandalia Alderwoman Barbie Elliott announced at Monday's meeting of the Vandalia City Council that she will be resigning from her council seat this summer.

    Elliott, who represents city residents living in Ward II, told city officials that she plans to serve on the council through July.

  • Goggin will run as independent candidate

    Greenville attorney Dan Goggin announced that he will run as an independent candidate in the state's attorney's race in Fayette County this fall.

    Goggin announced early Tuesday morning that he would run as an independent instead of challenging a ruling made by a county electoral board.

  • Area residents feel earthquake

    Though no damage has been reported in the area, most Fayette County residents reported feeling an earthquake that shook parts of several states.

    The epicenter of that quake was near Mt. Carmel, which is about 125 miles southeast of Vandalia.

    Many news outlets were reporting that the quake, which occurred at 4:36 a.m., measured 5.4 on the Richter Scale, but the U.S. Geological Survey reported it as being a 5.2 quake as of 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

  • GED Classes to be Offered at Crisp Center

    Kaskaskia College will offer two free G.E.D. (General Education Development) Review classes at the Crisp Center located at Rt. 161 and Airport Road in Centralia beginning in April and May.

    A session will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. beginning April 28. Another session will be held Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. beginning May 6.

  • Kaskaskia College Holds Physical Therapy Assistant Program Advisory Meeting

    Kaskaskia College recently held the Physical Therapy Assistant Program with Keith Shaw, Program Director, presiding.

    The program committee discussed Program accreditation, the PTA Program's mission and goals, Program assessment efforts, student outcomes and retention. The PTA Advisory Board discussed improvements made in the Program's facilities and curriculum, and the Board made suggestions regarding studying student clinical education and graduate employment.

  • Talk on county chairman hike leads to county administrator discussion

    In the five months that he has served as the chairman of the Fayette County Board, Steve Knebel learned why his predecessor recommended a pay hike for the seat as he left office.

    And as the board talked about such a pay raise last Thursday, the discussion on county operations went a little further.

    When Dean Black left the chairmans seat last November, he suggested raising the board leaders monthly salary from $200 to $500. He said such an increase is justified because of the number of meetings and trips required of the chairman as he represents the county.

  • School district still waiting on state funds

    Though the Vandalia School District wont know for another couple months if the state will short the school districts by withholding the final two state funding payments of the fiscal year, Vandalia Superintendent Rich Well isnt holding his breath.

    The general consensus among superintendents in the state is that the more we hear about the states budget deficit, the more likely it is that the states school districts wont receive the 23rd and 24th state aid payments, Well said after Tuesdays meeting of the Vandalia Board of Education.

  • Election board grants Friedel objection to remove Goggin from ballot

    A local electoral board ruled on Tuesday that an error on documents filed on behalf of a Greenville attorney who wishes to run for Fayette County state's attorney is grounds to keep him off of the ballot.

    But Republican Dan Goggin said he would likely appeal that decision in an attempt to square off against Democratic incumbent Stephen Friedel.

    In making its ruling, the electoral board also dismissed Goggin's motion seeking dismissal of an objection Friedel filed last Wednesday in which he asked to remove Goggin as a candidate.

  • Second chance will unveil new shelter and kennel this Saturday

    The organization of volunteer individuals who have worked since 2004 to rescue dogs and cats from abuse and neglect is inviting the public to view its new rescue shelter and boarding kennel this Saturday.

    Second Chance Animal Rescue will hold a grand opening at its new facility from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The rescue shelter and boarding kennel is located about 1 1/2 south of U.S. Route 40 at Bluff City.
