  • Museum has two new displays

    New exhibits are on display at the Fayette County Museum.
    One display case features Fayette County advertising calendars from 1890-1964. Paper, die-cut and two calendar plates are included.
    Ramsey is represented by two unique calendars from Lindhorst’s Mammoth Store in 1914; J. B. Green & Son in 1903, 1904, 1908 and 1909; and Ramsey National Bank in 1917.
    Brownstown is represented by calendars from D.O. Pitcher in 1912 and 1913, and from Griffith Bros. and Co. in 1939.
    The Civil War is featured in the other two special cases.

  • State Quitline offers help with smoking cessation

    The Fayette County Health Department is recommending assistance for individuals who are trying to quit smoking as a New Year's resolution.
    Those who are trying to call the Tobacco Quitline, 1-866-QUIT-YES.
    Sonsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the American Lung Association, the Tobacco Quitline is offered free of charge.
    Those who are trying to quit smoking receive support through the Quitline, and they can learn whether they are eligible to receive free nicotene replacement patches through the Fayette County Health Department.

    ✔ TOPS IL 1872, Ramsey, will meet at the Christian Church in Ramsey. Weigh-in is at 6:20 p.m., and the meeting is at 7 p.m.
    Saturday, January 14
    ✔ The Spirit, Soul and Body Fit Club will meet from 10-11 a.m. at Family YMCA of Fayette County on Rock Island Avenue in Vandalia. There is no membership fee.

  • Shimkus accepting military valentines

    Congressman John Shimkus (R, Ill.-19) is kicking off his “Valentines for Heroes” program, which has become a popular tradition for his constituents.
    Shimkus’s district offices will collect valentines for distribution to veterans and those currently serving in the military.
    “Thousands of valentines come into my offices every year since we began Valentines for Heroes,” he said.
    “The people of Central and Southern Illinois are overwhelmingly generous and supportive of our military men and women, past and present.”

  • Master Gardener deadline is Thursday

    If you have an interest in gardening and want to learn more about gardening, fruit trees and how to manage insect pests, then you may want to check out the University of Illinois Extension’s Master Gardener program.
    More than 3,500 master gardeners across Illinois volunteer in their community and share their knowledge with others through their local Extension office.
    Master gardeners are an important part of the educational mission of local University of Illinois Extension offices.

  • Carole Cripe Green picked for GEM Award

    Carole Cripe Green, a Vandalia area native who is a past state legislator and currently serves as a lobbyist, was chosen to receive the annual GEM Award by the Fort Myers Republican Women’s Club during the Tuesday, Dec. 13, luncheon meeting.

    The GEM Award represents individuals who have shown Good leadership, Effort in establishing programs and policies, and being a Major contributor to the community through time and effort.
