  • Auditor: City officials need to take another look at budget

    As he noted a large decrease in revenues in the past year, the person who heads up the firm preparing the city of Vandalia’s audit said it’s time for city officials to take a close look at its spending.
    “We’re in tough times,” Dale Timmermann of Timmermann and Co. Ltd. told the Vandalia City Council on Tuesday night. “You really need to think about the budget you adopted earlier this year, because you will not be able to meet your obligations.

  • Teen charged with murder now has private attorney

    The rural Farina teen charged with murdering a Loogootee couple in their home last month is now being represented by a private attorney.
    At a brief hearing in Fayette County Circuit Court on Wednesday morning, Monroe McWard of Taylorville told Judge William Becker that he had been hired to represent Clifford W. Baker.
    Baker replaces Fayette County Public Defender Ed Potter, who was appointed by Becker to represent the rural Farina teen.

  • Chamber members discuss future of the organization

    Though there was no outside program for last Wednesday’s meeting of the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce, its officers used the occasion to hold an open discussion about the future direction of the organization.
    Before that discussion was held, it was announced that this year’s chamber president, Shaun Murray, had resigned because his new job in Effingham makes it impossible for him to fulfill his duties with the local chamber.

  • Harner joins L-U staff

    Andrew Harner, a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, has been named sports editor of The Leader-Union.

    The Ohio native was a journalism major at BGSU, graduating in May. While at school, he worked extensively for the student newspaper, The Bowling Green News. He served as a page designer, copy editor, sports reporter, assistant sports editor and sports editor.

    As a senior, he was named the outstanding student in the BGSU print journalism school.

  • Cub Scout Pack 315 sets Join Us Night and Parent Orientation Meeting

    Cub Scout Pack 315 of Vandalia will hold its Join Us Night registration from 6-8 p.m. this Thursday at the American Legion Home in Vandalia.

    A parent orientation meeting will be held at 6 p.m. next Tuesday at the Legion Home.

  • Chamber, Main Street agree to remain independent

    After several weeks of discussing how they might benefit from merging or sharing resources, leaders of the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce and Vandalia Main Street have decided to remain independent organizations.
    To complicate the situation, Dana Whiteman, who serves as the executive director of Main Street as well as the vice president of the chamber, was elevated to the presidency of the chamber after the sitting president, Shaun Murray, resigned on Monday.
