  • History book deadline approaching

    The Fayette County Genealogical and Historical Society reminds county residents that the deadline for submitting articles for its Family and History Book is approaching.
    The deadline to submit family history articles, and to order copies of the book, is next Monday, July 15.
    Due to inconsistency of mail, the society has agreed to accept submissions all of next week.
    Family histories may be mialed to: Fayette County History Book, P.O. Box 177, Vandalia, Ill. 62471. They may also be dropped off at Evans Public Library in Vandalia.

    A fireworks display sponsored by the Vandalia Lions Club lit up the sky over Vandalia Lake on Friday night.

    The Lions Club also sponsored a carnival in the lake campgrounds over the Fourth of July weekend.

  • Birthday Celebration

    The congregation of First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia celebrated the church's 185th birthday on Sunday.

    During the morning service, Mary Truitt (first photo) read a history of the church, the first established in Vandalia, in 1828. On display (second photo) was "Illinois Riggs," the first bell to summon a congregation. In the afternoon, Midwest Winds of Scott Air Force Base performed in concert (third photo).

  • County considers solid waste ordinance

    When the Fayette County Board meets this Thursday night, it will set the date for a public hearing on a ordinance being proposed by its solid waste committee.
    The board, whose meeting was postponed from Tuesday due to the Fayette County Fair, will also vote on a request to help the city of Vandalia fund a water line extension project in Vandalia’s western Interstate 70 interchange.

  • Young, Roberts win Fayette fair crowns

    Sydney Young of Farina was crowned the 2013 Miss Fayette County Fair, and Reagan Sue Roberts, also of Farina, was named the new Little Miss Fayette County Fair on Tuesday.

     

    In the Miss Fayette competition, Sarah Frakes was named first runner-up, and Sierah Ruffner was named second runner-up. Young was named Miss Photogenic, Frakes won Miss Congeniality and Kayla Black won the People’s Choice award.

  • Vandalia Lions' fireworks are Friday night

    The Vandalia Lions Club's fireworks display is this Friday night at dusk.

    The Lions are also sponsoring a carnival through the Fourth of July Weekend at the lake marina campgrounds.
