  • Tools for School distribution begins Monday

    This year's Tools for School distribution runs from Monday, Aug. 11, through Saturday, Aug. 16, at First Presbyterian Church, 1221 W. Fillmore St., Vandalia.

    The distribution hours are: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday; and 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

    Children must be present to select their supplies. They may be accompanied by a parent, grandparent, guardian, babysitter or other adult.

    Those picking up supplies need to enter through the north door of the church.

  • Six indicted on federal meth charges

    Six area individuals were indicted on methamphetamine charges in federal court on Thursday.

    A. Courtney Cox, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois said that the following individuals had been indicted on a charge of conspiracy to manufacture, distribute and possess with the intent to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine:

    Thomas E. Wilkerson, 46, Shobonier

    David M. Fickes, 39, Effingham

    David M. Murray, 55, Ramsey

    Donald R. Schultz, 52, Vandalia

    Billy D. York, 49, Vandalia

    Wesley D. Conner, 44, Vandalia

  • 10 Wayside Exhibits Tell How Lincoln's Start in Politics was Right Here in Vandalia

    The committee charged with researching and telling stories about Abraham Lincolns time in Vandalia is planning to celebrate its biggest accomplishment to date the installation of plaques that present those stories to both local residents and tourists.

    At the same time, the committee is discussing how to fight state cuts at the Vandalia Statehouse and other Lincoln sites as Illinois prepares to join in on the celebration of Lincolns 200th birthday.

  • Ruot named temporary circuit clerk

    As expected, Fayette Countys resident circuit judge took action on Thursday afternoon that put Mary Sue Rout into the circuit clerks seat on a temporary basis.

    Judge S. Gene Schwarm signed an administrative order to fill the vacancy that was created by the retirement of Marsha Wodtka at the end of the day on Thursday.

  • Goggin tries to get back on ballot as a Republican

    A Greenville attorney is making his third bid to be on the Fayette County ballot as a states attorney candidate this November.

    The Fayette County Republican Central Committee filed last Friday a resolution in which it lists Dan Goggin as the partys candidate for states attorney.

    Were going to try it again, Randy Pollard, committee chairman, told The Leader-Union on Friday. I checked with the Illinois Board of Elections, and they said that I had the right to nominate someone. So, we had a meeting today (of the Republican Central Committee), and we re-filed today (Friday).

  • Bluff City takes the brunt of Tuesday storm

    Jena Paulding and her son, Kevin, begin the arduous task of cleanup after their home sustained significant damage from Tuesday's storm. Jena Paulding said that right before the storm hit, her son took a look outside. "He said, 'It's looking funny outside,'" she said. "Then we heard a loud boom, and we ran to the basement." The Pauldings' garage also sustained damage. "I don't even know where to start," Jena Paulding said.

  • Free health and information seminar is Tuesday at Moose Lodge

    A free senior Health and Information seminar will be held this Tuesday at the Moose Lodge in Vandalia.

    Its a great opportunity to learn about and get information on a variety of programs for seniors including prescription drugs, insurance programs, veterans benefits and more, said Watson (R-Greenville).

    Free information brochures and health screenings will also be available, according to Senator Watson.

  • Relay for Life Softball Challenge reset for this Saturday

    The Relay for Life Softball Challenge, which was postponed in June due to bad weather, will be held this Saturday at Ruemmelin Park on Locust Street in Vandalia.

    The challenge will feature four games:

    2 p.m.-First National Bank vs. WKRV

    3:30 p.m.-First National Bank vs. Peoples National Bank

    5 p.m.-Fire Department vs. Police Department

    6:30 p.m.-Fire Department vs. Police Department.

    Donations for Relay for Life will be collected during each game.

  • Judge appoints Ruot to circuit clerk post

    Longtime Fayette County Deputy Circuit Clerk Mary Sue Ruot on Friday was named clerk pro tempore following the retirement of Circuit Clerk Marsha Wodtka on Thursday.

    Chief Judge of Fourth Judicial Circuit, S. Gene Schwarm, made that appointment in an administrative order issued at 8 a.m. Friday.

  • Goggin again files as Republican state's attorney candidate

    Nearly three months after he was declared ineligible to run as the Republican candidate for Fayette County States Attorney because of an alleged filing error, Daniel Goggin of Greenville has once again filed as the partys candidate.

    Nomination papers were filed Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the office of Fayette County Clerk & Recorder Terri Braun.
