  • Solid Waste ordinance hearing, county board meeting to be held at Vandalia Junior High School

    Fayette County residents will have the opportunity next Tuesday evening to learn more about, and voice opinions on, the county’s proposed solid waste ordinance.
    Later that evening, the board may act on that proposed ordinance.
    A public hearing on the proposed solid waste ordinance will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the Vandalia Junior High School gymnasium.

  • Scouts get OK for meditation garden

    The Vandalia City Council agreed on Monday to let a local Girl Scout troop complete a community service project at the Old State Burial Ground and Vandalia’s Little Community Garden.

  • History/family book deadline extended

    The Fayette County Genealogical and Historical Society has received good news from the publisher of “Fayette County, Illinois History and Families Book” – the deadline for submissions and orders has been extended to Sept. 30.
    The deadline was extended after society members learned that some brochures were not delivered properly, and some county residents did not receive them until well into July.

    Mike and Risé Sahr had their Dodge Viper and recently acquired 1963 Plymouth Valiant on display at the car show held during Heritage Days at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville on Sunday afternoon.

  • Museum hosting 'Meet the Author'

    The Fayette County Museum and Artworks Gallery are hosting a “Meet the Author” session at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.
    The featured author is Joanne Hardy, who will talk about her book, “The Girl in the Butternut Dress.”
    Hardy grew up in Clay County and now lives in Palm Desert, Calif.
    Her historical novel is about a young girl facing the extraordinary challenge of divided loyalties during the Civil War. It is based on true stores from Southern Illinois.

  • Solid Waste ordinance hearing, county board meeting to be held at Vandalia Junior High School

    The public hearing on Fayette County’s proposed solid waste ordinance will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Vandalia Junior High School gymnasium.

    The board will then meet in regular session at 7 p.m. at the junior high.

  • Lemonade Stand Raises $5,000

    Carson LaDage, 6, hands a glass of lemonade to a customer Saturday morning at County Market in Vandalia.

    LaDage, who has a brainstem tumor, was inspired to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital through the lemonade stand. The stand attracted dozens of donors and raised about $5,000. Carson is the son of Todd and Darla LaDage of Pekin, and the grandson of Bill and Sharon LaDage of Vandalia. Combined with other lemonade stands, Carson has raised more than $10,500.

  • School board takes personnel action

    The Vandalia Board of Education held a brief special meeting on Monday to handle a four-item agenda regarding school employees for the upcoming school year.
    First, the board passed a resolution authorizing the honorable dismissal of two regular route school bus drivers, Whitney Smith and Donna Evans.
    Second, the board approved a motion to employ Danielle Stone and Stacy Thull as TLC (Training for Life Choices) aides at Vandalia Community High School and Okaw Area Vocational Center.

  • Fayette Water conducting income survey

    To obtain favorable interest rates on loans from the federal government for its water line extensions, Fayette Water Co. will conduct an income survey for the area to be served by those extensions.
    The rural water company is working with the Rural Community Assistance Program to conduct the survey for a number of residences in Bear Grove, Sharon and Shafter townships in the near future.
    Fayette Water is seeking low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Rural Development for the extension of water lines into those townships.
