  • Alderman wants more effort on notices of hearings

    As the Vandalia City Council made mention of an upcoming Zoning Board of Adjustments meeting, one alderman said he’d like city officials to consider putting a little more effort into informing residents of proposed zoning changes.
    But, another alderman said he thinks that that would be a waste of time and money.
    During Monday’s council meeting, an Aug. 22 zoning board hearing on a special use permit request filed by Margaret Summann and her father, Charles R. Sharp, was mentioned.

    Mayor Rick Gottman told the Vandalia City Council on Monday that he is talking with two prospects, and that he wants the residents of Vandalia – and the entire region – to help land those prospects.

    Tools for School distributions this week

    Tools for School, a program that provides free school supplies for Fayette County students in need in grades kindergarten through junior college, will be in operation at First Presbyterian Church on the following dates and times:
    • Thursday, Aug. 9 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Friday, Aug. 10 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Saturday, Aug. 11 – 9 a.m.-noon.
    Those picking up supplies are to enter the church, located at 1221  W. Fillmore St., through the north door.

  • City will consider allowing portable buildings on lake lots

    The Vandalia Lake Committee has been directed to draft specifications for an ordinance change that will allow a new type of structure to be placed on lease lots at the lake.
    Alderman Mike Hobler, chairman of the lake committee, said at Monday’s city council meeting that a lease holder had asked the committee to allow placement of a structure “based along the lines of portable sheds” on his lake lot.
    That is currently not allowed, as city ordinance requires lease holders to have a trailer or mobile home on lots on the north side of the lake.

    When Rick Gottman announced at a city council meeting last month that he would run for re-election, he wasn’t the only one at the meeting interested in running for Vandalia’s mayoral seat next spring.

  • Streetscape project scaled back again sc

    After taking a closer look at proposed streetscape work on side streets in Vandalia’s downtown business district – and the funds available to do that work – city officials have decided to concentrate on one two-block section for now.
    The city has received $630,000 in Community Development Assistance Program funds from the state for streetscape improvements in one-block sections north and south of Gallatin Street.
