  • Workplace health forums are set

    Through a Community Transformation Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and South Central Illinois Health Coalition (SCIHC) are using funds to implement “We Choose Health.”
    This is a statewide initiative to reduce chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, which are a significant portion (75 percent) of the health care costs in the United States.

  • House Fire

    Vandalia volunteer firefighter Zac Stombaugh uses an ax for ventilation and to gain entry to the second story of a home last Friday morning.

    Firefighters were called to 1106 W. Gallatin St. at 8:53 a.m., and arrived to see smoke coming from the residence, which is owned by Angela Stagar. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire in a second-story bedroom. Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour. No damage estimate was available, and no injuries were reported.

    Soroptimists hosting widows' luncheon

    Soroptimist International of Vandalia is accepting reservations through Friday for its New Beginnings Luncheon on Saturday, June 1.
    The free event for area widows will be held from noon-2 p.m. on June 1 at St. James Lutheran Church in Vandalia.
    Reservations are required, and all ages are invited to attend. To make reservations, call Judy Wasmuth at 283-2989 by Friday.
    In addition to lunch, the event will include speakers, music and door prizes.

    ✔ A Holy Cross Lutheran Church youth will hold a rummage sale from noon-6 p.m. on Thursday and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday at the church, 726 W. Fillmore St. in Vandalia. A plastic grocery sack full of items will cost $3, and larger items will be marked.

  • Bond is $3 million in murder for hire case

    Bond has been set at $3 million for a Farina man accused of trying to having his wife killed.
    Judge James Roberts set bond for Mark G. Fulk during a hearing in Fayette County Circuit Court last Wednesday afternoon.
    Also on Wednesday, Fulk, through his attorney Lou Viverito, pleaded not guilty to the charge of solicitation of murder for hire, a Class X felony.

  • City, council support FS project

    After no one showed up to ask questions about or voice opinions on the plans of South Central FS to build a new facility, the Vandalia City Council unanimously approved a letter of support for that project.
    Also on Monday, the Fayette County Board gave unanimous support for the project.
    As South Central FS officials unveiled its plans for a new facility at the city’s western Interstate 70 interchange last Monday, the council agreed to hold a public hearing prior to the city council meeting on Monday.
