    Museum seeks yard sale donations

    The Fayette County Museum is seeking donations of items for the yard sale it will hold on Saturday, Sept. 29, during the Grande Levée and Harvest Fest.
    Donations may be dropped off at the museum between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday of next week, and between 1 and 4 p.m. this Satuday.

  • Fatal wreck near St. Peter

    A Louisville woman died from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident near St. Peter on Sunday afternoon.
    According to the Illinois State Police, Laura K. Schnautz, 48, was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla north on Ill. Route 185, about two miles east of St. Peter, and continued north on a gravel field road when her vehicle left the roadway on the right and struck a concrete culvert.
    The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. on Sunday.

  • Mayor urges support of Legion's flag project

    About a year and a half after they lined Gallatin Street with American flags, members of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 noticed that the flags need to be replaced.
    Vandalia’s mayor encouraged the public on Monday to support the Post 95 project through which flags are displayed on Gallatin in good-weather months.
    Rick Gottman said at Monday’s city council meeting that the Legion is accepting donations for the flags, which cost $35 each.

    The future funding and operations options for the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department became more clear at a meeting on Saturday.

  • New school budget includes deficit

    The Vandalia Board of Education on Tuesday passed a budget for the current school year that shows a $1.58-million deficit in the four operating accounts over which the board has spending control.
    And even though the district still has a balance of $3.82 million in the bank to help it bridge the funding gaps, the state requires any districts in a deficit spending situation to develop a “deficit-reduction plan” to work its way out of the shortfall.

  • VVFD public meeting is Saturday

    Both Vandalia residents and those living in areas outside the city are being encouraged to attend a meeting about the future of the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday morning.

    The meeting, at 9 a.m. at city hall, will include discussions on the VVFD’s future funding and operations.

    Those attending the meeting will include Mayor Rick Gottman, VVFD chiefs and other members of a committee that Gottman appointed to study the department’s future.

  • ROE 3 receives grant for alternative education

    Regional Superintendent of Schools for Bond, Fayette and Effingham counties Julie Wollerman announced that her office was recently awarded two competitive grants to assist in funding ROE 3’s Alternative Education Programs.
    A Truants’ Alternative and Optional Education Programs grant was awarded to ROE 3 by the Illinois State Board of Education.
    This is a competitive grant that is awarded on an annual basis, and this is the 20th year that ROE 3 has received this grant to provide services to the at-risk students in the three-county area.
