  • Court gives city downtown land

    About 10 months after it paid more than $250,000 for the demolition of three buildings at a major downtown intersection, the city of Vandalia is the legal owner of the land at that location.
    Mayor Rick Gottman announced at Monday’s city council meeting that a court order issued last month awarded the city the property at the northwest corner of Fifth and Gallatin streets.

  • Beautification committee meets Thursday

    The members of a city beautification committee formed late last year is holding a meeting this Thursday evening in an attempt to get civic organizations and more city residents involved in their work.
    And on Monday, Mayor Rick Gottman announced that the funds for the project have been doubled.
    The beautification committee recently sent a letter inviting civic organizations to send representatives to a meeting at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday at city hall.

  • Pool grand opening is this Saturday

    Vandalia Swimming Pool Manager Lisa Robbins and her staff remember those in the community who supported their fundraisers in recent years.
    And now that the pool rehabilitation is completed, the pool staff wants those supporters to enjoy the finished product free of charge this Saturday.
    Robbins announced late last week that a grand opening celebration will be held on Saturday, with local residents allowed to swim free from 1-9 p.m.

    A company that had for about 15 years purchased items made at a Vandalia industry last week celebrated its one-year anniversary as the owner of that facility.

    ✔ The city of Vandalia's newly formed Beautification Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. at city hall. Individuals and organizations in the community interested in participating in community-wide beautification projects are encouraged to attend.
    ✔ The Crawford-Hale American Legion Unit 95 Auxiliary will meet at the Legion Home. The executive board meets at 5:30 p.m., committee meetings are at 6:30 p.m. and the regular auxiliary meeting is at 7 p.m.

    The decision of a Vandalia nurse to run for Fayette County coroner means that Fayette County voters will have a choice this November.
