  • AC bid OK'd for VCHS

    The only school building in the Vandalia School District without air conditioning will have it when students return next fall.
    The Vandalia Board of Education last week approved two bids for work at Vandalia Community High School that includes the installation of air-conditioning equipment.
    The $1,998,970 bid from Unterbrink Construction for removal of the existing heating equipment and the installation of heating and air-conditioning equipment was approved by the school board.

  • Other action at Monday's city council meeting

    At its meeting on Monday night, the Vandalia City Council:
    • Observed a moment of silence for Virginia “Ginny” Mabry, who had owned and operated several businesses in Vandalia with her husband, the late John Mabry.
    • Granted a request from Public Works Director Marlin Filer to seek bids for sidewalk installation in the section of the 500 block of West Gallatin Street where two building were demolished last fall.

  • Farina man charged with sex offenses

    A Farina man has been jailed on $750,000 bond after being charged earlier this week with felony sex offenses.
    Larry L. Sapp, 51, was charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault in information filed last Friday by the office of Fayette County State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison.
    All three counts allege that between Nov. 1 of last year and Feb. 1 of this year, Sapp “committed an act of sexual penetration” with a female under the age of 13.

  • Supporting cancer patients

    Some local residents who have been involved in the Fayette County Relay for Life are among those who have formed an organization that they feel will more directly benefit local people fighting cancer.

    John Shimkus and Hillary Clinton were winners on Tuesday in Illinois, but not in Fayette County.

    The son of a Vandalia native is among the participants in a culinary competition on national television.
