    Vandalia schools are being dismissed early today (Tuesday) under the following schedule:

    • Jefferson Primary-1:45 p.m.

    • Vandalia Elementary and Junior High-1:55 p.m.

    • High School-2 p.m.

  • Brownstown Fire Department uses grant for new turnout gear

    Using a federal grant, the Brownstown Fire Department has replaced its firefighters’ aging turnout gear.

  • Absentee voting gets under way next week

    The primary election in Fayette County is more than six weeks away, but some voters will begin casting their votes next week.
    According to the office of Fayette County Clerk and Recorder Terri D. Braun, absentee voting for the March 18 primary in Illinois gets under way next Thursday.
    In-person absentee voting at Braun’s office will be done using touch-screen voting machines, with the votes to be tallied after the polls close on election day.
    Under state law, absentee voters can no longer withdraw their absentee ballots and vote on election day.

  • Fulk asks for more details on charge

    A judge has ruled that prosecutors have until Friday to give more specifics in its allegations against a Farina man charged with trying to arrange for the murder of his wife.
    At a hearing last Wednesday in Fayette County Circuit Court, Judge Douglas Jarman granted a motion for a bill of particulars filed by Lou Viverito, the attorney for Mark Fulk.
    Fulk was charged in April of last year with solicitation of murder for hire, a Class X felony, for allegedly making arrangements to have his wife killed.

    Three Abe Awards for community service were presented and the gavel was passed to a new president at last Thursday’s 100th anniversary banquet of the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce.

  • Ellis makes run for sheriff

    A Vandalia man who worked in law enforcement in Fayette County for close to two decades has announced his run for sheriff.
