  • Few races on election day

    Vandalia residents will only have one decision to make next Tuesday, while Ramsey voters have the most to pick up when it comes to filling spots on the village board.
    In Vandalia, the only contested race is in Ward I of the city council, where incumbent Neil Clark is being challenged by Ken Hubler.
    That race initially featured three candidates, but a third, Christine Helinski, withdrew after filing nomination papers.

  • Pinnacle ready to add 90 jobs

    Pinnacle Foods will next week celebrate the startup of a new product line that will more than double the number of employees at its St. Elmo facility.
    Pinnacle is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. next Wednesday as it opens manufacturing for its recently acquired Wish-Bone salad dressings business at its plant in St. Elmo.
    The St. Elmo plant currently employs about 85 people, and Pinnacle is planning to add 90 more workers in the first half of this year as it prepares to bring Wish-Bone production in-house.

  • Residents air concerns about new dog park

    As they discussed the ongoing development of a dog park, Vandalia Park District commissioners listened to concerns about the park from residents of that area.
    Commissioner Steve Hawkins reported at the park board’s March meeting that the development of the dog park in the district park at the east end of Madison Street had included the installation of a fence on the south side of the park.

  • Park board OKs ordinance for swimming pool bonds

    The Vandalia Park Board of Commissioners last Tuesday took another step toward funding the major rehabilitation of its community swimming pool.
    At a special meeting, commissioners approved an ordinance for alternate bonds, which would generate $390,000 toward the pool project, estimated to cost about $1.275 million.
    They planned to meet again this week to approve another ordinance, one for general obligation bonds that would generate another $353,000.

  • Mitchell sentenced to prison

    Adrian Mitchell, 24, of St. Elmo, was sentenced to prison on Monday after admitting that she had violated her probation.
    Mitchell, who was originally convicted on a charge of theft, a Class 2 felony punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
    The office of Fayette County State's Attorney Joshua Morrison filed a motion to revoke her probation.
    Judge M. Don Sheafor Jr. sentenced Mitchell to 40 months with the Illinois Department of Corrections.

  • Bethel Baptist announces Easter services

    Bethel Baptist Church, located northwest of Vandalia on Ill. Route 185, has announced its schedule for Easter services:
    • Thursday, April 2 – Maundy Thursday services. Worship will be centered on "The Seven Last Words of Christ."
    • Easter Sunday – 7 a.m., sunrise services; 7:30 a.m., Easter breakfast; 9 a.m., Sunday School; and 10:15 a.m., Bethel choir Easter cantata – "Run to the Cross."
    The public is invited to participate in the church's services.
