  • State police release 2016 figures

    Illinois State Police District 12 Commander Capt. Cory Ristvedt recently announced activity and enforcement figures for 2016.
    Troopers in District 12, which includes Clark, Clay, Crawford, Cumberland,
    Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Lawrence, Marion and Richland counties answered 2,748 calls for service and initiated 21,905 incidents in the field during the year.

  • Bridge work progressing

    Despite some delays, a major bridge project in Vandalia is progressing at a decent pace, Director of Public Works Marlin Filer said last week.

  • Baker sentencing again reset

    A new sentencing hearing for a Loogootee resident convicted in 2011 of murdering a neighbor couple has again been rescheduled.
    During a teleconference last Thursday, a new sentencing hearing for Clifford W. Baker was set for April 3.
    Involved in that teleconference were the judge assigned to conduct the hearing, Associate Judge Allan F. Lolie, State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison and Public Defender William B. Starnes III.

  • County OKs $796,000 transfer

    The Fayette County Board on Tuesday approved another transfer from the county’s capital improvement fund, one that is much larger than past fund loans.
    And much of that latest loan will be spent to meet the county’s current financial obligations.
    The board approved in a 9-3 vote a loan of up to $796,000 from the county’s capital improvement fund, and in another 9-3 vote, it gave County Treasurer Rose Hoover the authority to transfer the funds.

    ✔ The Crawford-Hale American Legion Unit 95 Auxiliary holds its monthly meetings. The executive board meets at 5:30 p.m. and the regular auxiliary meeting is at 6 p.m.
    ✔ CenterPointe Church, located at 1616 Veterans Ave. in Vandalia, is holding free Weekly Fit Club sessions at 6 p.m. every Thursday.

  • Protz in state competition Jan. 19-22 in Springfield

    Miss Fayette County Fair Queen 2016 Brandy Protz will compete at Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant.

    The 58th annual Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant will take place at the IAAF Convention held Jan. 19-22 at Crowne Plaza in Springfield.
    Protz will compete along with 71 other contestants from throughout the state.
    Brandy is the 20-year-old daughter of Randy and Janel Protz, and Brenda Protz.

  • Gaming again put on hold

    The Vandalia City Council’s plan on Tuesday to hold first readings of two requests for liquor licenses tied to gaming was killed before it even came up.
    Instead of reading those requests, which are from businesses whose earlier requests were denied, the council voted to focus on the idea of limiting the number of gaming parlors in the city.
    One of those requests is for a license being issued to Discount Tobacco, and the other is for the transfer of an existing license to Meyer Oil.

    All local students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 are invited to partipate in Evans Public Library's Winter Reading Program, "Book Your Winter Get-Away!"
    For each book they read over the winter, participants will receive a ticket to enter to win prizes.
    The program runs through Feb. 28. Students may sign up anytime at the library.
