  • Illinois products expo to feature local foods, wines

    Fifty-four Illinois food companies will give away samples of their products this weekend at the 14th annual Illinois Products Expo.
    The aptly-titled “Food and Cooking Extravaganza,” which also features Illinois-made wines and agriculture-based products like soy candles, will be held Saturday and Sunday in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. In all, 77 companies are scheduled to participate.

    Temps up, precip down in February
    Above-normal temperatures and below-normal snowfall throughout the state continued into February. Some farmers are anticipating an early planting season if current conditions continue.
    Temperatures averaged 34.3 degrees, 4.6 degrees above normal. Total precipitation was 1.20 inches, .63 inches below normal.
    Farmers reported good progress for winter wheat, though the continually soft ground has challenged some winter livestock work.

  • State, U.S. cattle are at record lows

    The total number of cattle and calves in Illinois on Jan. 1 was 1.07 million head, which is 3 percent below last year's total, and the lowest cattle inventory on record for the state.
    Beef cow inventory was down 6 percent from 2011, to 331,000, while milk cows were up 1 percent, to 99,000.
    Nationally, the number of cattle and calves was also down. As of Jan. 1, the number of cattle and calves was 90.8 million head, 2 percent below the 92.7 million recorded on Jan. 1, 2011.

  • Loan opportunities expand to help beginning farmers

    Expanding loan opportunities to beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers is the goal of a program recently introduced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Illinois Farm Service Agency.
    "U.S.D.A. continues to find ways to improve our services for farmers and ranchers by streamlining processes, accelerating delivery and using innovative solutions to 21st century agricultural issues," said Scherrie Giamanco, Illinois FSA executive director.

    Woolsey Brothers dinner is March 1
    Woolsey Brothers Farm Supply will be holding its annual customer appreciation dinner on Thursday, March 1.
    The event will include a meal  and entertainment by country music Moe Bandy. Two times are being offered for the event – one at noon and one at 6:30 p.m. Both will be held at the Crawford Hale American Legion Home.
    Woolsey Brothers Farm Supply has been hosting events for its customers for 51 years.

  • Early Lambs Arriving

    A week-old lamb on the farm of Lynn Wollerman northwest of Vandalia munches on a piece of straw as it explores its new surroundings.

    The lambing season will begin in earnest in late January and into February.

    Risk management meetings planned
    Farmers interested in receiving a checkup on their risk management plans are invited to attend one of two upcoming meetings in the Central Illinois area.
    Meetings will be held on Jan. 31 at the Holiday Inn in Mt. Vernon and on Feb. 1 at the Northfield Suites in Springfield. Both meetings begin at 5 p.m., cost $19 and include a ribeye steak dinner.
