  • Two from VCHS attend band camp

    Maresha Mitchell, left, and Alexa Campbell of Vandalai Community High School attended the Smith/Walbridge Drum Major Camp at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. They are shown with Gary Smith, a former director of the Marching Illini at the University of Illinois. At the camp, Mitchell and Campbell received leadership and training they will put to use with this year's Marching Vandals.

  • State school sales tax holiday begins Friday

    With the first statewide back-to-school sales tax holiday starting this Friday and running through Sunday, Aug. 15, the Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding families to plan on shopping for the new clothes and school supplies their children need to get a good start at school this year.
    A list of items qualifying for the 5 percent sales tax break is available at www.tax.illinois.gov and can be downloaded or printed from any computer, and used to help plan necessary back-to-school purchases.

    St. Louis College of Pharmacy
    Katie L. Ochs of Vandalia has been named to the dean’s list with honors for the spring 2010 semester at St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
    To make the dean’s list with honors, students must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average for the semester.
     Ochs is the daughter of Vince and Cathy Ochs and is a 2005 graduate of Vienna High School.
     Founded in 1864, STLCOP is the oldest college of pharmacy west of the Mississippi River.

    Blackburn College
    Blackburn College has announced those students named to its spring 2010 dean’s list.
    Earning a grade point average of 4.0 were Beth Campbell, daughter of Timmy and Glori Campbell; and Tiffany Gould, daughter of Ron and Tena Gould, both of Vandalia; and Nicole Opfer, daughter of Craig and Amy Opfer, and Staci Smithson, daughter of Darin Smithson, both of Shobonier.

    Valparaiso School of Law
    Robert D. “Rob” Woodward of Troy graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law on May 22 with a juris doctor degree.
    Woodward is a 2003 graduate of Triad High School and a 2007 graduate of Illinois College in Jacksonville.
    He is the son of Bob and Jo Layne Woodward of Troy, and the grandson of Iva and the late Marion “Goose” Duckworth of Mulberry Grove.
    Valparaiso University School of Law was founded in 1879 as the Northern Indiana Law School.

  • Brownstown Registration

    Brownstown Community Unit Schools will be holding registration for the 2010-11 school year for both the elementary and junior-senior high school on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., in the elementary school cafeteria.
    Registration will be for the one day only.
    All students, including those new to the district and special education students, should register at this time.

  • St. Elmo Registration

    Registration for St. Elmo Junior-Senior High School and St. Elmo Elementary School, including pre-kindergarten, will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, and Wednesday, Aug. 11.

    All students, including those new to the district and district students who attend classes in Vandalia, should register at that time.

    Junior-senior students enrolled in physical education classes are required to wear P.E. uniforms, which can be purchased at registration for $10.

  • St. Peter's Lutheran School registration

    St. Peter's Lutheran School will hold registration for the 2010-11 school year next Monday, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and Tuesday, from noon-6 p.m., in the school office.

    Preschool/dayeare registration will be held in the preschool office at the same times.

    Students entering kindergarten and sixth grade should submit a school health physical and up-to-date immunization record at the time of registration.

  • Patoka School District Registration

    The Patoka School District will hold registration Aug. 4-6.

    Registration for students in grades kindergarten through eight will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon and from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, and from noon-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6.

    Registration for students in grades 9-12 will be held from 8:30-noon and from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6.
