  • Despite some improvements, test scores show some students at risk of getting 'left behind'

The Vandalia School Board last week heard from Superintendent Rich Well that though progress is being made, the district did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress in 2010 standardized test scores.
The district’s scores were 71.8 percent in reading and 74.2 percent in math. The state standard – which goes up each year by 7.5 percent – is currently 77.5 percent, and next year it will rise to 85 percent. The state’s goal is to have 100 percent of the state’s students meeting the standards by 2014.

  • VCHS Alumni Reunion

After 14 years of coordinating the multi-year Vandalia Community High School Alumni Reunion, Mary Miller handed the reins to the Vandalia Community Schools Foundation. Approximately 150 people attended the event and all seemed to enjoy themselves, according to the event committee, which had that as its primary goal. The date for next year’s reunion will be determined shortly and word will be sent out so that people can plan ahead.

Five Vandalia High School classes met at Days Inn in Vandalia on Sept. 11 for a reunion.
In 1988, the VHS class of 1948 celebrated its 40th reunion, and invited classes from 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1950 to share in the planning of the reunion.
These five classes have continued to meet jointly over the years, with the individual class chairmen remaining the same: 1946-Iris Brooks Rademacher; 1947-Jeanne Lawler Hohlt; 1948-Annie Spinner Eller; 1949-Gary Bone; and 1950-Jean Meredith Stombaugh.
