    'Community Engagement' set

    Dr. Jim Underwood, president of Kaskaskia College and Bill Hawley, chairman of the KC Board of Trustees, invite the public to join them for a “Community Engagement” meeting at the Vandalia Campus on Monday, June 27.
    The event is being held for Underwood and Hawley to meet with area residents to provide input and discuss the operations of Kaskaskia College.
    Area residents are welcome to stop by the campus between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 545-3036.

    Clayton Black of Brownstown graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

  • Dean's List

    Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville has announced the names of students qualifying for the dean’s list for spring semester 2011.
    To qualify, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or better and have 12 hours calculated.
    On the dean’s list were:
    • Brownstown – Kaitlyn Jo Kramer and Hannah Elizabeth Wrigley.
    • Farina – Meghan S Glaspell.
    • Fillmore – Kiley S Havera.
    • Mulberry Grove – Brennon Gene Links.

  • IACO Scholarship

    Carissa Lotz (right), a recent South Central High School graduate and daughter of Fayette County Supervisor of Assessments Cindi Lotz (left), received one of the four-year scholarships from the Illinois Association of County Officials at its annual spring conference on Monday, May 9.

    Lotz will attend the University of Illinois College of Business in Urbana-Champaign this fall.

  • Shobonier School Reunion

    The Shobonier School Reunion, which is for all schools in Shobonier, will be held this Sunday at the Senior Citizens Center, 616 W. Jackson St., Vandalia.

    Doors will open at 10:30 a.m., and a potluck dinner is at noon.
    Meat, plates, cups, napkins, silverware and drinks (coffee, tea and water) will be furnished. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.

    VCSF Golf Outing is Friday, June 17

    The second annual Vandalia Community Schools Foundation Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 17, at Vandalia Country & Golf Club.
    The format is a four-person, 18-hole golf scramble, with shotgun tee times at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    The entry fee is $160 per team, or $40 per person. Both teams and individuals may sign up.
    Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of both the morning and afternoon rounds. Lunch will be provided for all participants from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

    On behalf of the 29 members of the Brownstown Education Association, President Suzanne Stinebring, right, presents Marisa Thomason with a $400 scholarship.  Marisa is the daughter of Shelly and Tony Thomason.  She plans to continue her education in elementary education.

  • Benton awarded scholarship

    Donovan Benton is among a highly select group of scholarship recipients attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Engineering this fall.
    Benton has been awarded a $5,6oo Thomas J. Murray scholarship for continuing studies in mining engineering. He is a Tau Beta Pi initiate and Alpha Lambda Delta initiate, and he received scholastic honors.
    He is the son of Brenda and Donald Benton of Vandalia, and grandson of Jim and Wilma Shoemaker of Centralia.
