  • School foundation is starting Distinguished Alumni Award

    The Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation is searching for nominees for its inaugural year of presenting annual Distinguished Alumni Awards.
    The inaugural winners will be awarded their plaques at the Alumni Banquet on Sept. 27, and a plaque will be placed in the high school.
    Criteria for candidates include:
    • Graduated from Vandalia High School.
    • Graduated at least 20 years prior to nomination.
    • Have made outstanding accomplishments in his or her profession.

  • KC will hold open house in Vandalia

    Kaskaskia College will hold an open house at the Vandalia Campus next Wednesday, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
    A light lunch will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and refreshments will be served all day.
    Tours will be provided and residents are encouraged to stop by and meet the staff of the Vandalia Campus, located at 2310 W. Fillmore St.
    Financial aid specialists will be on campus to assist with the 2014-2015 FAFSA application, and academic advising will be available for both summer and fall classes.

  • VCHS play is this weekend

    This year's play at Vandalia Community High School, "The Mouse that Roared," will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in the VCHS gym.

    Illinois State University
    Two area students have been named to the dean's list at Illinois State University in Bloomington:
    • Dylan Krueger of Vandalia.
    • Dylan Bullard of St. Elmo.

    Kaskaskia College
    Hannah McDonald of Salem has been named to the president's list for full-time students at Kaskaskia College.
    McDonald is the daughter of Bill and Sandy McDonald of Brownstown.
    She is the granddaughter of Lee and Brenda Harris of St. Peter, and Wanda Puleo of Brownstown.

  • Sheriff's scholarship applications accepted

    The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association has announced that it will be awarding more than $53,000 in college scholarships throughout the state to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2014-15 academic year.
    The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. Students must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state.
    Fayette County Sheriff Aaron Lay will be awarding one $500 scholarship.

    Digital photography class
    The Kaskaskia College Office of Continuing/Community Education will offer a digital photography class at the Vandalia Campus.
    The class will be held Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 24-25, from 6-8 p.m. The registration number for the class is COED-5428-VA01E.
    The cost is $20, but students over 60 may register at no cost.
    Students may register through the Vandalia Campus by calling 283-1780 or the Office of Continuing/Community Education at Kaskaskia College at 545-3255.

  • Openings in KC surgical technology program

    Kaskaskia College has announced that slots still remain open for fall admission into the one-year certificate program in surgical technology, which is offered through the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market (SICCM).
    Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.
    The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
