    Community College

    Brooke Knebel-Renfro graduated from Lincoln Land Community College on May 13 with an associate’s degree in arts and graphic design.

  • Area students honored at Illinois College

    Illinois College
    Three area residents were among the students Illinois College recognized for academic excellence on April 29 when the liberal arts college held its annual Celebration of Excellence.
    • Whitney Hagy, a senior, was awarded membership into Kappa Delta Pi, the education national honors society.
    Hagy is a graduate of Vandalia Community High School, and is the daughter of Elizabeth Deutsch and Mark Hagy, both of Vandalia.

  • Parrish awarded scholarship

    Taylor Parrish, a 2011 Vandalia Community High School graduate, has been awarded a trustee scholarship from Franklin College.

  • Archery club moves range; shoot is Saturday

    The South Central Archery Club has moved its 3D archery range to the circle drive at Stephen A. Forbes State Park, and its next shoot is this Saturday.
    Registration times for the first shoot at the new location are unchanged, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
    Cash prizes will be given to the top shooters in each of five classes.

  • Brownstown Alumni Reunion

    The Brownstown Alumni Reunion will be held on Saturday, July 16, at the American Legion Home in Vandalia.
    The reunion will begin with registration and a get re-aquainted time from 4-6 pm. There is no charge for the social hour.
    Serving for the meal will begin at 6 pm and requires reservations by July 9 to guarantee seating with each person’s graduating class. The cost of the meal is $12 per person.

  • Dean's List

    SIUE
    Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has announced the names of students qualifying for the dean’s list for spring semester 2011.
    To qualify, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or better and have 12 hours calculated (B is equivalent to 3.0; A to 4.0).
    The students on the dean’s list include:
    • Brownstown – Kaitlyn Jo Kramer and Hannah Elizabeth Wrigley.
    • Farina – Meghan S. Glaspell.
    • Fillmore – Kiley S. Havera.

  • College Graduates

    ITT Technical Institute
    Derek Woolsey of Vandalia graduated from ITT Technical Institute in Earth City, Mo., on March 31.
    The commencement exercises were held at the Marriott Airport Grand Ballroom in St. Louis.
    Woolsey, the son of Kent and Tammy Woolsey, received a bachelor's degree in information systems security. He is a 2006 graduate of Vandalia Community High School.

    More than 1,640 students earned academic degrees after the 2011 spring semester at Western Illinois University.

  • Helping Earthquake victims

    Blythe Smith of Vandalia was one of 11 Missouri Baptist University  students to travel to Haiti to rebuild a family’s house that was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. The students went on the mission trip from May 5 to May 14 to assist the work of Bethel Mission Outreach, a multifaceted mission organization located in Croix Des Bouquets, Haiti. This is the fourth consecutive year MBU has partnered with Bethel Mission. The Haitian family of six whose house the group rebuilt had been living in a tent since the Jan. 12 earthquake.

  • Palecek Honored

    Amy M. Palacek of Brownstown has been awarded the FEI Scholarship by the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville School of Business. The scholarship was presented at the school's recent scholarship and awards program. Palecek (center) is shown with Michael Costigan (left), chair professor of accounting, and Gary Giamartino, dean of the SIUE School of Business.
