    Tools for School
    dates, times set

    Tools for School, a program that provides free school supplies for Fayette County students in need, will be in operation at First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia on the following dates and times:
    • Wednesday, Aug. 10 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    •Thursday, Aug. 11 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Friday, Aug. 12 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Saturday, Aug. 13 – 9 a.m.-noon.
    The program is open to all students in need in grades K-12.

    It’s hard to believe as wealthy as America is, and with the government programs that are available, that there are children who do not get enough to eat outside of school, but it’s true. It’s true here in Vandalia.
    It is this simple fact that prompted Parkview Free Methodist Church to start Backpack Food for Kids in Jefferson Primary School just across the street from their building.

    Kaskaskia College will be hosting a special fall 2011 Registration Day at the main campus on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
    Departments providing services for the day will include advisement, admissions and registration, placement testing, financial aid, library, cashier’s office and bookstore.
    Advising will be available on a walk-in basis that day.
    Kaskaskia’s Children’s Learning Center staff will also be available for families to register their children for childcare.

    Vandalia
    Registration for students in all Vandalia schools will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Vandalia Junior High School.
    Brownstown
    Brownstown Community Unit Schools will be holding registration for the 2011-12 school year for both the elementary school and junior-senior high school on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., in the elementary school cafeteria.
    All students, including those new to the district and special education students, should register at this time.

  • Knights of Columbus Donates

    Vandalia Knights of Columbus gave a $500 donation to TLC classes at Vandalia Middle School in May.

    With this donation, the classes purchased lower-level reading books and life skills materials to teach students basic life skills and safety. This donation was made possible for these students by donations given during the Knights of Columbus annual MH Candy (Tootsie Roll) Drive.

    Vandalia
    Registration for students in all Vandalia schools will beheld from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Vandalia Junior High School.
    St. Elmo
    • Aug. 1 – 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
    • Aug. 2 – 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
    • Aug. 1 – 6-8 p.m. – Seventh-grade orientation/registration for all seventh-grade students and parents.
    Brownstown

  • Dean's List

    McKendree University
    Chelsy Durbin of St. Elmo was named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at McKendree University in Lebanon.


    Durbin is the daughter of Charlie and Nancy Durbin of St. Elmo and is a 2008 graduate of St. Elmo High School.
    To earn dean's list honors, McKendree students must have a grade-point average of at least 3.6 on a 4 scale.

    Several Lake Land College Honors Program students were recognized recently at the annual honors luncheon.
