  • Area schools set registration dates, times

    Vandalia
    Registration for students in all Vandalia schools will beheld from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Vandalia Junior High School.
    St. Elmo
    • Aug. 1 – 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
    • Aug. 2 – 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
    • Aug. 1 – 6-8 p.m. – Seventh-grade orientation/registration for all seventh-grade students and parents.
    Brownstown

  • Tools for School dates, times set


    Tools for School, a program that provides free school supplies for Fayette County students in need, will be in operation at First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia on the following dates and times:
    • Wednesday, Aug. 10 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    •Thursday, Aug. 11 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Friday, Aug. 12 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Saturday, Aug. 13 – 9 a.m.-noon.
    The program is open to all students in need in grades K-12.

  • Dean's List

    McKendree University
    Chelsy Durbin of St. Elmo was named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at McKendree University in Lebanon.


    Durbin is the daughter of Charlie and Nancy Durbin of St. Elmo and is a 2008 graduate of St. Elmo High School.
    To earn dean's list honors, McKendree students must have a grade-point average of at least 3.6 on a 4 scale.

    Student orientation
    Kaskaskia College invites its new students to attend a new student orientation.
    The free program is designed to introduce students to information and contacts important for a successful start of their college experience.  Information about services and activities and classroom success strategies will be included.
    Students who attend this program traditionally perform better in college than those who do not.
    A session will be held Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 9-11 a.m. at the KC Crisp Technology Center.

  • Local teacher participates in writing project

    More than 3,000 kindergarten through college teachers across the country will dedicate four weeks of their summer break to learning new strategies to improve their students’ writing skills.
    These teachers will study the latest research and effective classroom practices in summer institutes at more than 200 National Writing Project (NWP) sites on college campuses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • KC offers financial aid assistance

    Kaskaskia College students are reminded that it is not too late to apply for financial aid.
    Fall classes begin Aug. 22, and students still have time to meet enrollment deadlines.
    Students are encouraged to attend the FAFSA Friday workshop on Aug. 5 hosted by the Kaskaskia College Financial Aid Office, from 1-3 p.m. in room L-102 on the KC main campus.
    The purpose of this event is to help college-bound students who need to complete and submit the 2011-12 free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
