  • Wilkerson Wins VJHS Geography Bee

    Maddie Wilkerson, shown with Vandalia Junior High School Principal Brian Kern, was the winner of the seventh-grade National Geographic geography bee.

    The finalists in the geography bee are shown with Kern: Wilkerson, Shayntel Elam, Lindsay Dagen, Molly Kern, Miranda Carroll, Carter Towler, Brayden Caswell, Ryley Watson and Jackson Hall.
     

  • VCSF Quarter Auction

    The Vandalia Community Schools Foundation held its inaugural quarter auction on Saturday night.

  • KC Vandalia Campus

    Sign language
    The Vandalia Campus is offering an extensive series of sign language classes for both children and their caregivers.
    The classes are offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings for both 2- and 3-year-olds.
    The topics include eat and drink, clothing, play, mom and dad, pets, nice words, bedtime and many more.
    This course is open to all children and caregivers, both hearing-impaired and non-hearing-impaired.
    The cost for each four-session block is $20 per caregiver.

  • Vandalia parent-teacher conferences are Friday

    The Vandalia School District will hold parent-teacher conferences from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. this Friday.
    Teachers will be available except during the following lunch times:
    • 11-11:30 a.m.-Okaw Area Vocational Center.
    • 11:15-11:45 a.m.-Vandalia Jefferson Primary School.
    • 11:30 a.m.-noon-Vandalia Elementary School.
    • 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.-Vandalia Junior High School.
    • Noon-12:30 p.m.-Vandalia Community High School.

  • Berg Wins BES Spelling Bee

    Stephen Berg, in the first photo, won the spelling bee at Brownstown Elementary School on Friday, earning the right to advance to the district bee in Mulberry Grove.

  • Okaw Grad Excels At Welding School

    Levi Tessman (at right in the first photo), a 2011 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, participated in the welding program at the Okaw Area Vocational Center his junior and senior years.

    He is now  attending a 10-month program in welding at the Midwest Technical Institute in Springfield. He has already earned all eight certifications offered at MTI and is at the top of his class there. Shown with Tessman is David Koleson, welding instructor at the Okaw Center.

    Congressman John Shimkus (R, Ill.-19) has announced his nominations to the four military service academies.

  • College News

    Karin Cox received a doctorate degree in cognitive psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in December.


    Cox, who is a 1999 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
    The daughter of Rick and Jane (Hubbard) Cox, she is currently serving in a post-doctorate position at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
