  • Patoka registration is Aug. 3-6

    The Patoka School District has released registration information for the 2014-15 school year.
    The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 18, with students in session from 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. For the first two weeks of school, students will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m.
    Registration will be held under the following schedule:
    • Pre-K – Monday, Aug. 3, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • K-12 – Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4-5, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Wednesday, Aug. 6, noon-6 p.m.
    The school office will be closed from 11 a.m.-noon each day.

    Monmouth College
    A Fayette County resident was among students at Monmouth College during its annual honors convocation.
    Haley J. Wollerman of Bingham received the Kate Spencer Memorial Scholarship.
    A senior business administration major, she is the daughter of Lynn and Julie Wollerman of Bingham.

    A Patoka resident was named the recipient of a scholarship at Southern Illinois Carbondale for the fall semester.

  • VHC releases info on school physicals

    Summertime means baseball, picnics and pooltime – and the kickoff to school and sports physical season. Yet, in the midst of the fun, physicals are often forgotten until school is right around the corner.
    And if a child doesn’t have a physical on record by the start of the school year, he or she could miss out on the upcoming fall sports season or even be subject to exclusion from school if an exam is not completed by Oct. 15.

  • CNN Money notes Lake Land College's success rate

    The national online publication CNN Money recently recognized Lake Land College among the nation’s best 100 community colleges in preparing students for graduation.
    Lake Land College’s 54 percent success rate is also in the top 25 in the state, tied for seventh.
    The study, conducted by a joint venture between CNN Money and College Measures, is based on the success rate of graduating students within three years or students transferring to a four-year university.

  • KC president announces plans to retire in 2015

    At its meeting last week, the Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees approved the retirement next year of the college’s president, Dr. James Underwood.

    Anderson University
    Morgan LaDawn Duff was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind.
    To be named to the dean’s list, a student must have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

    Spring graduates at the University of Illinois Springfield included three area residents:
    • Bingham-Jackie Michelle Johnson, liberal studies, cum laude graduate.
    • Fillmore-Mandy Smith, visual arts.
