  • 8th Grade VCSF Scholarship Winners

    The two eighth-grade winners of the Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation Scholarships are Molly Kern (left), daughter of Brian and Beth Kern, and Lindsay Dagen (right), daughter of Harold and Edith Dagen.

    The two completed a rigorous application process and wrote a monitored essay. The scholarship awards $1,000 to the two girls, and the money is kept in the First National Bank until they graduate from high school and decide where they will be furthering their education. This is the sixth year for the scholarship.

  • New CNA class starts on Aug. 19

    Kaskaskia College certified nursing assistant classes at the Vandalia Campus are going strong, with one group of students finishing in July, and another class enrolling for August.

    Boston University, New York University
    Twins Lewis S. Smith and Adam C. Smith of Palatine recently graduated from Boston University and New York University.

  • Tools for School schedule

    Tools for School, a program that provides free school supplies for in-need students in Fayette County, will be in operation at First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia under the following schedule:
    • Wednesday, Aug. 14 – 9 a.m.7 p.m.
    • Thursday, Aug. 15 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Friday, Aug. 16 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Saturday, Aug. 17 – 9 a.m.-noon.
    The program is for students in kindergarten through junior college from Brownstown, Farina, Ramsey, St. Elmo, St. Peter and Vandalia.

  • Painting for Kids at KC

    The Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus recently held a Painting for Kids class through the college’s Kids in Kollege at Kaskaskia (KICK) program.

  • NWTF Donates to NWTF

    At its banquet on Saturday at the Vandalia Moose Lodge, the OKAW Valley Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation presented a check for $670 to Brownstown Elementary School.

  • Brownstown Registration

    Registration for Brownstown School District students will be held from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, in the elementary school cafeteria.
    Registration fees are as follows:
    • Grades K-6 – $95.
    • Grades 7-12 – $120.
    • Okaw Vocational – $7.
    • Driver education – $50.
    • P.E. uniform – $17.
    • Dual credit – biology II-$111.60; and strategies for success-$41.85.

  • Patoka Registration

    Registration for students in the Patoka School District will be held as follows:
    • Grades K-8 – 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Monday, July 29, and noon-6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30.
    • Grades 9-12 – 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.
    The district office will be closed from noon-1 p.m. on all three days.
    Fees:
    • Grades K-6 – $45 book fee and $15 lab fee.
    • Grades 7-12 – $50 book fee and $20 lab fee.
    • Athletic fee – $20, with a family limit of $50.

  • St. Elmo Registration

    Registration for St. Elmo schools will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, and Friday, Aug. 2.
    The seventh grade orientation and registration, for all seventh-graders and their parents, will be held from 6-8 p.m. in the cafeteria at the junior-senior high school.
    All students, including those new to the district and district students who attend classes in Vandalia, should register on Aug. 1 or 2.

  • Vandalia Registration

    Registration for students in the Vandalia School District will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Vandalia Junior High School.
    Each building will have registration packets of forms for parents to print, fill out and bring with them to registration, in order to expedite their children’s registration.
