    McKendree University
    Several area students were honored at McKendree University for their academic performance during the fall semester.
    Morgan Myers of Beecher City, a junior who is majoring in athletic training, was named to the president’s list. To be on the president’s list, students must have a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

  • Nursing students pinned at KC Vandalia

    Family, friends, instructors and college officials joined together on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus to congratulate the December 2013 class of practical nurses.

  • KC Honor Students

    Kaskaskia College has released the names of students on its dean’s and president’s lists for the fall semester.
    Students who earn a grade average of 3.5 or above are named to the dean’s list.
    Students who earn a 4.0 grade average are named to the president’s list.
    Students on those lists follow:

  • VJHS Parent Night is Monday

    Vandalia Junior High School will hold its inaugural Parent Night from 6-7 p.m. next Monday.
    The event will include an address by Beth Hoffman of Pathways Counseling. Hoffman will speak on the subject of stress management, talking about coping strategies and relaxation techniques.
    Parents of all VJHS students are invited, and they are asked to bring their children who are students at the school.

  • BES Jump Rope for Heart

    A Jump Rope for Heart event took place at Brownstown Elementary School last week. During one of the "jumping" days, students participated in the Hurdle Hop.

    Students are collecting money for the American Heart Association through Feb. 3. The event, sponsored by the AHA, encouraged students to work on cardio and coordination, and maintain a healthy life style now to reduce their risks of heart attack and heart disease in their future.

  • SCHS students attend FBLA conference

    Future Business Leaders of America members and advisers from South Central High School attended the Southwestern Area FBLA Conference at Kaskaskia College in Centralia on Saturday, Jan. 18.

  • BES Spelling Bee

    Brownstown Elementary School held its annual spelling bee on Wednesday morning. In the first photo are the spellers who competed for the school's top prize.

    From left to right are fourth-graders Taylor Smith and Quinton Logan; fifth-graders Cassi Payne and Conner Reeter; and sixth-graders Makenzie Walk and Bryton Pruett. In the second photo is Walk, who won the competition and now advances to the county spelling bee in Mulberry Grove on Feb. 21.

  • VCSD Receives Grant

    The Vandalia Community Unit School District recently received a $4,000 grant from the South Central Illinois Health Coalition, along with CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) curriculum and materials after each of the district's four buildings began a coordinated school health program.
