  • Eighteen members and eight guests met at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia on June 30 for the monthly meeting and noon luncheon for ExxonMobil Annuitants Club.
    The pledge to the flag was given and then there was a moment of silence for member Bettye Sprayberry, who died on Monday, June 27. Brock Fisher asked the meal blessing.
    After the meal, President Dean Black opened the meeting with a welcome to members and guests. The secretary and treasurer report was read and approved.

  • First United Methodist Church in Vandalia is selling cookbooks that feature recipes collected from members and friends of the church.
    The cost is $15 per book, with proceeds applied to the church’s camping scholarships. The church has 23 young people sign up for church camp this year.

  • It has been said, “Time Marches On.” You can stop a clock, but you can’t stop time. It continues to march on without regard to our own time requirements.

  • Hi, Ho! It’s Not Too Late …
    …to come to the Fayette County Fair! As is our Homesteader’s tradition, we (namely Bill and Panzi) went to the fairgrounds early (Sunday afternoon) to see the 4-H kids’ animals and walk through the building for the various competitions  (cookies, art works, photography, crafts, floral arrangements, etc.).
    And Eating the Delicious Fair Foods
    We stopped at the pork building and enjoyed a delicious lunch of brats, French fries and iced tea … and also a visit with Charlie Depew.

  • The congregation of St. James Lutheran Church in Vandalia recently formed a Thrivent Action Team to support the fundraising efforts of “Journey for Jordan,” a group of 75 bicycle riders who ride 183 miles, from Gays in Illinois to St. Louis, Mo., in memory of Jordan Giertz, to raise funds for Haven House in St. Louis.

  • Ragel
    The Ragel family reunion will be held this Sunday in the Centennial Building at St. Elmo Park. A potluck will be held at noon, with drinks provided.

    Torbeck
    The Torbeck reunion will be held on Sunday, July 17, at the Senior Citizens Center, 616 W. Jackson St., Vandalia. Dinner begins at 12:30 p.m.

  • Holy Cross VBS is July 17-21

    Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at 726 W. Fillmore St. in Vandalia, will hold Vacation Bible School from July 17-21, 6-8 p.m. The VBS, with the theme of “Barnyard Roundup,” is open to children age 3 to sixth-grade age.

    'Sincerity' at Ramsey church

    “Sincerity,” a gospel group from the Decatur area, will perform in concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday at First Baptist Church in Ramsey. Fellowship will follow the concert. There is no admission fee, and the public is invited.
