  • Dr. Ryan M. Jones has accepted a teaching position at State University of New York in Geneseo.

    Jones is teaching Latin American history and is part of a cluster interdisciplinary hiring initiative that includes faculty members intent on working together across departments for research projects and teaching.
    Jones is the son of Janice and Jerry Jones of Ramsey, and the grandson of Virda Forbus and Shirley Jones of Vandalia.

  • Aubree Elise Gaylord
    Mikayla Roach and Andrew Jordan Gaylord of Troy are the parents of a girl born at 7:08 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2014, at a St. Louis, Mo., hospital.

  • The Mother of Dolors’ Catholic Daughters meeting on Jan. 5 was called to order by Regent Debby Themig, who opened with the pledge to the flag and one decade of the rosary for Brian and Virginia Garner. Everyone was asked to finish this rosary on their own.
    Correspondence included thank-you cards from Bonnie Murray, Lighthouse Pregnancy Center and Port Arthur International Seafarers Center, and a letter from George Green with correct address for his mother, Gertrude Green.

  • Are you a Christian? Likely most of you would say, “Of course” – I would not be reading the Minister’s Forum if I wasn’t a Christian.

  • The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Dec. 18 at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia for a Christmas party, with 32 members and four guests present.
    Following the pledge to the flag, Vera Miller gave the meal prayer.
    After the meal, President Dean Black gave the welcome. The tables were decorated with Christmas candles, centerpieces and candy for each member, and also a Hershey bar decorated like a snowman, made by Laura Mulhern.
    Those who helped in decorating, games, and cookie and candy walk were Mike and Laura Mulhern, and Frank and Carolyn Heigert.

  • Mother Madricka & Bucky (Donkeys) Get ‘Spooked’
    Recently, when in a thrift store, I purchased a long, warm coat with a hood, thinking it will be perfect to wear out to the critters’ pens in rainy, cold weather.  However, when I wore it out to give carrot treats to Madricka and Baby Bucky, they came out of their barn, took one look at me and ran.  
    Even when I talked to them and held the carrots out for them, they would not come near me. The long, hooded, dark coat scared them.

  • Sausage Supper
    The annual sausage supper will be held on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 5  p.m. in the St. Peter’s Lutheran School gym.
    Death
    Mike Wasmuth of St. Peter died on Monday evening.  Funeral arrangements are pending.

    Saturday evening worship attendance was 126. Sunday morning worship attendance was 111.   
    The Rev. Alan Holtz was the organist.  
    Gaige Phillips served as acolyte.
    Jay Rothe and Curtis Jenne were attending elders.

  • Piano students of Staccato Studios and Christine Jones, instructor in Fillmore and Vandalia, played Christmas music for the residents of Tremont Ridge in Hillsboro during their dinner hour on Dec. 9.

  • Kristina Marie Stunkel and Trevor Scott Summers, both of Corpus Christi, Texas, and formerly of Vandalia, have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.
