    • Wolf Creek Cluster of United Methodist Churches picnic, 4 p.m., Brownstown Park. In case of rain, it will be held at the Methodist Church, just across from the park. Those attending are to take dishes to pass and lawn chairs.
    Sunday, September 21
    • The new superintendent of the Embarras River District of United Methodist Churches, Scott Grulke of Effingham, will be installed at a 3 p.m. service in the Effingham Centenary United Methodist Church.

  • Andy Hoover of Mulberry Grove shows the unusually large potatoes he has grown this summer. Some of the red potatoes weigh as much as 2 1/2 pounds.

    Jason and Alison Laack of Vandalia are the parents of a boy born at 5:37 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

    Cody and Katelyn Ennen of St. Peter are the parents of a girl born at 5:08 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.

  • The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Aug. 28 at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia for its monthly meeting and luncheon, with 22 members and five guests present.
    The pledge to the flag was given, followed by the meal prayer given by Dean Black. After the meal, Black welcomed all who were present.
    The secretary and treasurer reports were read and approved.
    Birthdays and anniversaries for August were read, and health issues of two members were updated.
    Deeds awards were given to several members who had volunteered 50 or more hours.

  • Kleinik
    The 86th Kleinik family reunion was held Aug. 31 at Greenville Patriots’ Park main pavilion, with a potluck at noon. Twenty-seven were present. Evelyn Hecht was the eldest present, at age 84; and Corey Elam was the youngest present. Kent Elam traveled the farthest from Portland, Ind.
    The 2015 officers are Brent Elam, president; Dean Kleinik, vice president; and Carol Herrin, secretary/treasurer.

  • Chloe Rybacki of Vandalia and Christopher Thomas of Mulberry Grove have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • Mayor Rick Gottman, right, signed a proclamation declaring this Friday and Saturday as Knights of Columbus MH Days.

    On Friday and Saturday, members of the Fayette County Knights of Collumbus will be handing out Tootsie Rolls and accepting donations. Proceeds support the Knights' work with Special Olympics programs, FAYCO activities and EMH/TMH activities. Shown with the mayor is Mike Sahr, the Knights' MH chairman.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bowen will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this Saturday.

    Bob and Ann Bowen were married on Sept. 13, 1974, at First Baptist Church in Vandalia.
    They have two children: Shane Bowen and his wife, Kristen, of Ballwin, Mo., and Cheri and her husband Eric Lux of Effingham. They have three grandchildren: Ellie Bowen, and Macy and Ryann Lux.
    The Bowens, formerly of Vandalia, currently reside in Keyesport.

  • Melvin and Lillian Sporleder of Altamont, formerly of St. Peter, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this Friday.
