  • Picture this – It is a brisk mid-winter evening in Vandalia in the year 1861.
    The town square around the state capitol building, usually quiet at this hour, is alive with sounds of horse-driven carriages, spoken greetings, conversations and the laughter of men and women.

    Longhorn cattle are considered a “wild” breed, and are not allowed in the county and state fairs competitions because of their long, curved horns (which are to be avoided, as they sometimes suddenly toss or turn their heads without regard of something in their path).

    Our community was saddened by the death of lifelong resident, Richard “Dick” Stock. He died on Jan. 24 at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 25 days. The funeral was held on Saturday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
    Marriage
    Allen Magnus of St. Peter and Delores “Lody” DeVore of Centralia were married on Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. The couple will reside in rural St. Peter.

    Evergreen Outreach was back at First United Methodist Church this week.
    Cindy Hunter, the leader for the week, welcomed everyone. The crowd enjoyed the fantastic music of SoftFire, as David and Patricia Pence played a variety of songs, including “Jesus, Prince of Peace,” “Holy, Holy, Holy,” “Onward Christian Soldiers,” “At the Cross” and “Power in the Blood.”

  • I was listening to a talk radio station in the car where the host of this particular program was interviewing a person who was working toward getting the word “God” out of the pledge of allegiance.

  • Adelynn Mae Bowling
    Jake and Kristen Bowling of Vandalia are the parents of a girl born at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

  • The Rev. Ernest and Joyce Flowers will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this Friday.
    Their children will be joining them for their anniversary weekend.

  • Larry and Sue Keyes of Brownstown will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary this Thursday.
