  • Morning Coffee by the Campfire
    Early Sunday morning was just too nice to let it pass by us. Years ago, before we moved on the Homestead, we would go camping every year. One of the most treasured enjoyments was having our coffee early in the morning by the campfire.

    • The Avena Township Park Board will meet at 7 p.m. in the St. Elmo Community Park Centennial Building.

  • The Lighthouse Pregnancy Center' annual fundraising banquet was held March 24 at Mother of Dolors Parish Center in Vandalia.
    The banquet was well attended, with more than 200 guests and supporters of the center.
    The featured speaker was Kathy Sparks of Granite City. Sparks shared her testimony of having once worked as a medical assistant in an abortion clinic. She now serves as executive director of Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers in Granite City, Belleville and Edwardsville.

  • Kieran Brown and Rachel Carpenter of Carbondale are the parents of a boy born at 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.


    He weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 23 inches long. He was named Tobias Pearse.
    Grandparents are Todd and Lisa Wagner of Vandalia, Paul and Christine Pearse of London, England, and Robert and Jodene Carpenter of Hoffman.
    Great-grandparents are Dean and Cathy Bernhardt of Vandalia, Cleo and Janet Wagner of Mulberry Grove, and Kathleen Pearse of London, England.

  • Trish Bolyard and Scott Vantine have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.


    The future bride is the daughter of Rick and Marilyn Bolyard of Brownstown.
    The future groom is the son of Donna and the late Norman “Frank” Vantine of Etna, N.Y.
    They met online and dated long distance for three years before he moved to Illinois in 2010.
    The couple are planning a May 14 wedding in Rogier Park in Vandalia.

  • William “Bill” and Lois Hill will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary this Friday.

  • Trevor Thomas at First Church of God
    Trevor Thomas, known as "Mr. Drama," will appear at First Church of God in Vandalia this Friday at 7 p.m. His programs combine music, monologues, poems, sketches and mime.
    The church is located at 3001 Thrill Hill Road northwest of Vandalia, just off of Ill. Route 185.

    Crown Point to give 'An Easter Drama'

    After a stormy night on Sunday, the sun came out on Monday, and Evergreen Outreach was hugely attended. All chairs were full.
    Cookies made by Iris Rademacher and Peg Clark were eagerly accepted, along with drinks. Many volunteers helped with serving.
    Donna Smith, who often plays the piano as guests enter, was not able to play. Her husband, Gail, is seriously ill. Prayer for him and his family would be most welcome.

    Michael “Mike” Lewis of St. James Lutheran Church will speak at the final Lenten Luncheon of the season at the First Baptist Church next  Wednesday.
    Lewis is a licensed lay minister and has been a member of St. James Lutheran Church for more than 25 years.
    He and his wife, Nancy, live in Vandalia, where he was born and grew up.
    He has served on the church council and on committees, and currently serves on the worship music committee.
