    • A reminder that youth age 8 and older may enroll in a three-day photography workshop that will be given at the Vandalia Extension Office from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, June 6; Wednesday, June 8; and Friday, June 10. Reservations have to be made by this Wednesday. There is no cost for 4-H members, and the cost is $10 for non-4-H youth. Call 283-2753 to register.

    Do you want to “fan the flame” you once had? Maybe you once had a “fire” to worship and serve the Lord, but circumstances in your life – or even church – put that fire out!
    Are you looking to reignite that flame? Are you looking to have in you the same fire you see in others?
    Northside Christian Church, 1845 W. Jackson St. in Vandalia, will hold a one-night revival on Pentecost Sunday, June 12, at 6 p.m. under the theme of  “Fan the Flame.”

  • Thomas and Judy Steiner of Mulberry Grove celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Friday, May 27.

    Thomas Steiner and the former Judy Bunyard were married on May 27, 1971, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Greenville.
    They are the parents of four children: Debra Phillips, Keith and his wife Rhonda Steiner, and Christy Steiner, all of Mulberry Grove, and Becky and her husband Russ Rieke of Greenville.
    They have 12 grandchildren.
    The couple enjoyed a celebration with family and friends on Sunday.

  • Robert “Bob” and Helen Smith of Hagarstown will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this Friday.
    Bob Smith and the former Helen Little were married on June 3, 1961, by the late Rev. Archie Brown.
    Their attendants were George and Shirley Little.
    Helen is the daughter of the late Russell and Maxine Little. Bob is the son of Virginia and the late Voris Smith.
    They are the parents of two children: Jon and his wife Andi Smith of Vandalia, and Paula and her husband Gary Roach of Hillsboro.
    They have three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

  • Last week, 90-year-old Miles Filer shared his story about serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Army Airborne Division; his jump over Normandy on D-Day; his capture by the Germans; and 11 months as a prisoner of war, nine of which he worked in a coal mine in Czechoslovakia, until the war was over.

    May 1945
    The war was over – Miles Filer was rescued from a POW camp, returned home after an honorable discharge and began life again as a civilian.

  • Auxiliary News
    The St. Peter American Legion Auxiliary Unit #380 met at the Legion home at 7:30 p.m. on May 17, with 15 members present.
    President Patti Taylor called the meeting to order and proceeded with the opening rituals. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary, and also the treasurer’s report, since the Treasurer Arlene Lee was not present due to illness. Both reports were approved. A note from Lee was also read.

  • Brownstown First Baptist to hold VBS
    First Baptist Church of Brownstown will hold Vacation Bible School from Monday, June 13, to Friday, June 17. The nightly sessions will run from 6-8 p.m.

    VBS at Patoka Christian is June 5-10
    Vacation Bible School will be held Sunday, June 5, through Friday, June 10, at Patoka Christian Church.
    Under the theme of High Seas Journey, the sessions run from 6-8:30 p.m. nightly for students in pre-K through fifth grade.
