    Joe and Lorin Kirk of Vandalia are the parents of boy born at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.


    He weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 20 inches long. He was named Joseph Maximilian.
    Grandparents are Fred and Vanessa Keck, and Mark and Molly Kirk, all of Vandalia.
    Great-grandparents are David and Veronica Keck, Dan and Linda Michel, and Janice and the late Joe Kirk.

  • Hoffman
    The Hoffman family reunion was held on June 19 at Rogier Park in Vandalia.
    Five families were not represented – Leonard, Harry, Edmund, Arnold and Raymond Hoffman.

  • Crystal Howard and Jude Rodrigues were united in marriage on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at The Enzian Theater in Maitland, Fla., with the Rev. Kevin Knox officiating.

  • Kenny and Pat Gathe will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Shrine Club on Vandalia Lake.
    Kenny  Gathe and the former Pat Murphy were married on Aug. 12, 1951, in Jackson, Miss.

    …this hot weather. She has shade in her pen, an igloo house, in which she sleeps, but she chooses a corner of her pen where the sun shines down all day. She has a fuzzy coat and it seems strange, but this seems to be her favorite spot.\

  • 50th Anniversary Celebration
    Allen and Jeanette Sasse of rural Shobonier celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 17 with a renewal of vows at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Augsburg.

  • When Julie Wollerman was sworn into office by Judge Gene Schwarm on July 18, she became the new superintendent of Regional Office of Education No. 3 (Bond, Fayette and Effingham counties), the first woman to serve in the position.

  • Egg Production Goes Down (as temperatures go up)
    The girls (hens), Anita and Blackie, have cut back on the egg production this week, but that’s OK. If it is too hot to lay the eggs, it is also too hot to cook them.

  • Legion Auxiliary
    The St. Peter American Legion Auxiliary Unit 380 met at the Legion Home at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, with 11 members present.
