  • On Sunday, Aug. 14, Fayette County 4-H’ers had the opportunity to show off their talents at the Illinois State Fair.  
    Results include:
    • Emily Aderman exhibited in fiber and received an Award of Excellence.
    • Kayla Black exhibited in photo editing and received an Award of Excellence.
    • Iris Daiber exhibited in nature and received an Award of Excellence.
    • Isaac Daiber exhibited in woodworking II and received a Superior.
    • Courtney Howard exhibited in clay and received an Award of Excellence.

  • Karli Waddell and Seth Kruenegel, both of Vandalia, have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • Sara White and Zac Guerrettaz, both of Park City, Ky., have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • Jim and Catherine Bowen of Vandalia will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this Friday.
    Jim Bowen and the former Catherine Pettie were married on Sept. 9, 1961, at the Free Methodist Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Vernon Parsons officiating. Their attendants were Sam Grotts of Pana and Susan Ober Lager of Yukon, Okla.
    They are the parents of three children: Steve, Cathy and Quinn all of Vandalia.
    They have six grandchildren: Stephanie Bowen of Effingham, and Bailey and Cassidy Jones, and Jake, James and Quincy Bowen, all of Vandalia.

  • Ramsey series planned at Parkview

    A preview meeting for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University series will be held this Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at Parkview Free Methodist Church in Vandalia.
    The 13-week series will be held at 6 p.m. Sundays at the church. The first two classes (Sept. 11 and 18) are free and open to the public. The series is part of a national campaign called “The Great Recovery.”
    The average participating family pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 during the course.

  • It is that time again, when parents may dread to learn that buying what is necessary for the new school year often means buying things so that their child can belong to all those kids pressured to follow the newest trends.

  • Every Thursday, from two to 10 women gather at Haley Chapel to exchange recipes (and samples), share ideas, introduce different crafts and patterns, share food on their “break,” and, most important of all, enjoy their friendships and all the good things that involves.

  • Austin
    The 17th annual Austin family reunion will be held on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at the Austin home place with a carry-in dinner at 1 p.m.

    Drinks and tableware will be furnished. All family and friends are invited to attend.

    Dothager
    The annual Dothager family reunion was held on Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Pleasant Mound Community Center with 49 in attendance.

  • On August 25 the ExxonMobil Annuitants met for their monthly meeting and luncheon at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia with 28 members and four guests.

    Following the pledge to the flag, Brock Fisher gave the meal prayer.

    President Dean Black opened the meeting with a welcome to all present. Secretary/treasurer reports was read and approved. Birthdays and anniversaries for August were read. Humorous readings were read by LaVerne Laux and Madelon Fisher.
