  • St. James Lutheran resumes schedule

    St. James Lutheran Church in Vandalia has resumed its regular fall worship schedule. Services will be held at 10 a.m.
    Because of the street construction in front of the church, worshipers are asked to park in the lot behind the church, which can be accessed from Eighth Street.

    October, the transition month, heralds many special things and events.
    Pumpkins have appeared; apples are in abundance; leaves are flying in a downward dance; Halloween is approaching; and, of course, the World Series games are in full force.
    It is a wonderful time to enjoy the activities of Evergreen Outreach, and you would discover that you are having a great time each Monday afternoon.

  • A good pastor friend of mine brought the following story to my attention:
    It is said that one morning in 1888, Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, picked up a paper and read an account of his death.

    Reneé Snider and Scott Hull are the parents of a girl born at 12:38 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2011.

  • The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Sept. 29 for its monthly meeting and luncheon at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia.
    There were 25 members present, as well as two guests, Kenneth and Angie Hagen from Shelbyville.
    Following the pledge to the flag, Brock Fisher gave the meal prayer. After the meal, President Dean Black called the meeting to order, the secretary and treasurer report was given and approved.
    Birthdays and anniversaries for September were read.

  • Mary Riedle and Dave Knoche have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • Sarah Roberts of Vandalia and Scott Windler of St. Charles, Mo., were united in marriage on Friday, July 23, 2010, at Old Hickory Golf Course in St. Peters, Mo., with the Rev. Andrew Erickson performing the outdoor ceremony.

  • Mr. and Mrs. John Moyer of Vandalia will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this Sunday.

  • Evan D. Burns grew up in Vandalia. He was a member of the Vandalia Community High School football and basketball teams, and also wrestled before he graduated in 2001.

    That time is here again – the baseball playoffs and the St Louis Cardinals are in them!
    We do not have cable or satellite. We still have an antenna with the little “box,” which usually works fine for us, for what television we watch … until the baseball playoffs and begin.
    We have two modern version radios, neither of which will pick up KMOX good enough to hear it.
