  • Catholic women to hold deanery meeting

    The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women of the Litchfield Deanery will meet this Thursday at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Gillespie. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m., a business meeting and a luncheon.
    Carlos Tejeda, associate director for the Office of Marriage & Family Life of the Springfield Diocese, will be the speaker at the luncheon. His topic will be "The Value of Marriage and Family Life."

  • Landen Jacob Cook
    Tessa Shafer and Jacob Cook of Vandalia are the parents of a boy born at 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.


    He weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and was 19 inches long. He was named Landen Jacob.
    Grandparents are Todd and Jana Shafer, Maurice Wilson and Jill Wright, and Kevin and Janet Cook, all of Vandalia.

  • Terri Schwarm and Dustin Blue have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

    The annual Hopper family reunion will be held on Sunday, Sept. 4, at the North Loudon Townhouse, just north of Wright’s Corner, with a potluck dinner at noon.
    Those attending are asked to take a covered dish to share. Drinks and tableware will be provided.

    The Garrison family reunion was held on Sunday, Aug. 14, at the St. Elmo City Park, with 35 present.

  • Norman and Mary Ann Rhoades of Ramsey will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Vandalia Days Inn.

  • Norman Clough, who is 83 years old, has a very clear memory of the days that are referred to as the “Oil Boom” in the St. Elmo area.
