    • The Royal Neighbors of America #5784 will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Altamont McDonald’s for the birthdays’ celebration.

  • David and Susan Oldham’s attention, time and interest had long been exclusively dedicated to the several donkeys that reside on their rural Vandalia homeplace.

  • Clarence Freeman
    Clarence Freeman, a former Vandalia resident now living in a rural suburb of San Diego, will be honored this Sunday as he observes his 105th birthday.
    In 1910, when Freeman was 3 years old, his family moved to Vandalia. He worked for Vandalia Lumber Co. for more than 15 years, beginning in about 1930, rising to the position of assistant manager.
    He also served four years as an alderman for the city of Vandalia.

  • Sherry Wadkins of Patoka, left, was the winner of a quilt given away in a raffle held by FAYCO Enterprises Inc.

    The quilt has an appraised value of $1,600 and was donated to FAYCO by Spools of Fun Quilt Club. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to purchase an AED machine for emergency CPR. Wadkins purchased her ticket at County Market in Vandalia. Presenting the quilt to Wadkins was Risé Sahr of FAYCO.

  • The Fayette County Hospital Auxiliary awarded two scholarships at its June meeting.

    Samantha Stefanski of Vandalia, left, is pictured receiving a $500 scholarship to Lakeview College in Danville from Sayona Perry, president of the FCH Auxiliary. Stefanski is working toward a bachelor's degree in nursing. Also receiving a scholarship from the auxiliary was Julie Schilling of Brownstown, who will be attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to pursue a career in the medical field. Schilling was unable to attend the meeting.

  • Hailey Carson of St. Elmo and Trey Wright of Beecher City have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Alan Harrison of Vandalia will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this Sunday.

  • Betty Abendroth
    An open house to celebrate the 80th birthday of Betty Abendroth will be held from 2-4 p.m. this Sunday at the Phillips Building in St. Elmo. The open house is being held by her children.
    The family requests that those attending not take gifts.

    Margaret Adermann

    A card shower has been requested for Margaret Adermann of Vandalia, who will celebrate her 90th birthday next Monday.

  • Several months ago, two members of the Lawson family began researching their family history on ancestry.com from different areas in the United States.
    Through the wonders of the Internet and Facebook, they have connected and would like to connect with more of the extended family.
    Based on what family members have learned, they probably have relatives in each of the 50 states.
    Therefore, there will be a Lawson family reunion, on Saturday, July 28, at St. James Lutheran Church, located at 727 W. Gallatin St., Vandalia.
