    What a day! What a joy! On Monday, it was 70 degrees outside, but we enjoyed the spirit of Christmas inside Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church.
    Donna Smith greeted us with a medley of beautiful Christmas carols: “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” “There’s a Song in the Air” and “Joy to the World,” to name a few.

  • Christmas cantata this Sunday at FUMC

    The choir at First United Methodist Church in Vandalia will present its annual Christmas cantata at 10 a.m. this Sunday.
    This year's cantata is titled, "And On Earth, Peace."
    The church is located at 127 N. Fourth St. For more information, call the church at 283-3684.

    Liberty Christian choir program Sunday

    The choir at Liberty Christian Church will present a program called "Wonderful Joy" at 10 a.m. this Sunday.

  • In November, Joy and I went to Buffalo, N.Y., and saw Niagara Falls, among other things.

  • It is a Full Moon!
    The truth is, when there is a full moon, some of the critters’ behavior changes– really!
    For example, Callie, the kitty, has been under our feet almost constantly the last few days. She follows us from room to room, which aggravates Josie, the doggie, to no end.
    She will then lie down across the hallway, which bars Josie from the room. Josie then sits and barks for us to rescue her.

    • The St. Elmo Business Association, noon, Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
    • The St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club will have a Christmas party at 6 p.m. at the Vandalia Ponderosa. To pool rides, members are to meet at St. Mary’s parking lot at 5:20 p.m. Those attending can take canned goods for Caring and Sharing.
    • The city council meeting scheduled for December 3 was rescheduled to meet at 7 p.m. this Thursday at the Phillips Building.

  • Lauren Ashley Radliff and Aaron Peter Sczurko, both of O’Fallon, were united in marriage in a 4 p.m. ceremony on Aug. 11, 2012, at Grace Church in Mahomet, with the Rev. Brent Reese officiating.

  • Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 and Unit 95 Auxiliary held their annual Christmas party on Sunday night at the Legion Home in Vandalia.

  • “We wanted to give something back to our community,” Lindsay Lash said in explaining the reason that she and her husband, Ryan, created the popular Happy Hollow Pumpkin Patch a few years ago.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Edgar of Vandalia will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with family.


    The Edgars were married on Dec. 14, 1952, at the bride’s home in Shelbyville.
    They are the parents of three sons: Kim Edgar and his wife Paula of Vandalia, Kevin Edgar and his wife Connie of Vandalia, and Kelly Edgar and his wife Teresa of Greenville.
